Any tool that your life depends on should be trained with until it feels like an extension of the self. Its use should be as instinctual as the use of your limbs.
Only through dedicated practice can this be achieved. As adults it is hard to achieve the same results as can be achieved by someone who was raised with the tool.

Sometimes you have chores to do and life gets busy, kids that don’t have a safe and non-nuisance outlet will start fighting, tearing up the house, and getting into trouble and possibly hurting themselves.
This morning I had to go to an open mat so I was not with them as I would usually be. When I came home they were doing cardio drills on our living room mats. (This is a recreation of that, there was actually baby Mozart going in the background lol)
This saves you so much hassle, is healthy for them, and is safe and fun. No Ipads, no video games, no cartoons, just getting it every day.
Drillers make killers.

Last year Leo performed “the man in the arena” by Roosevelt. Several parents and administrators remembered that performance. It is much better to push your children to do things which will give them justified cause to feel pride and self worth rather than to shower them with empty praise for little or nothing.
If you create the expectation of excellence and reward only that, then that will be the target for the child’s life. If you spare their feelings to avoid them feeling disappointment or pain it will be at the cost of a mediocre future.
This year Leo performed the St Crispin’s day speech from Shakespeares Henry V and received even higher praise. One lady said she would remember it for the rest of her life, which might have been hyperbolic but was very well received by my son nonetheless.
Next year we will attempt the “unto the breach once more” speech from the same play.

So much of becoming a man is doing what we’re scared to do and learning how to calm panic and turn it into manageable fear.
It’s been a while since Leo hit this jump and it’s bigger now, the gap wider than his bike. It takes a lot of get back up after dropping a bike on a jump. Even a mild fall is hard on the body but Leo adjusted his technique and made the jump.

Many parents fear giving authority to their children over their other children. When you homeschool, a child’s idea of leadership comes from you.
The instinct to bully, take advantage of, or to be cruel is something generally learned from hierarchies observed in public school settings with kids from broken homes.
When there is clear hierarchy and authority this actually creates more love between siblings. Just as having a clear hierarchy between man and wife make marriage more peaceful and peace is fertile soil for love to mature and deepen.

Children like most mammals learn from mimicking the behavior of the peers they trust the most. You cannot tell them to be a certain way without being a living embodiment of it.

Little art project my kids did this weekend with mom while I was away.
You don’t want to be a slob, but an obsession with trying to maintain an immaculate house when you have multiple children can rob them of experiences they will treasure.
One day they will grow up, their chubby little faces will lean out, they will not be interested in little art projects and then you will have the rest of your life to have your perfect instagrammable house, or if things go well you’ll have a house full of messy, somehow always sticky, grandchildren who love you.
You don’t want to be a slob, but an obsession with trying to maintain an immaculate house when you have multiple children can rob them of experiences they will treasure.

As a part of the night time routine with our kids we say the prayers of the rosary followed by the family credo

All the things that first borns tend to get more of are the things liberals decry in parenting. Parents tend to be most strict and disciplined with their first born children.
People also complain about “parentifying” children. They see giving them some responsibility over their siblings as abuse. These same hags complain when husbands don’t change diapers (because they were never taught how).
All of these things, I believe, are what gives first borns this edge. As we have more children we tend to want to let up on them. To coddle them more. Maybe there’s a sort of trauma that occurs when you realize that first time that your little toddler grows up and is gone forever, replaced by a stronger more independent but different child. This softening up is a mistake and studies bear this out.

A man is the general in his home, it is his responsibility to maintain a basic level of fitness for the sake of safety. We’re doing a daily ruck, working up to a mile hike up hills. Today we hit .65 with everyone carrying some weight.

An instructor has to be available to monitor the proper understanding of these things so that time is not wasted reviewing where kids have mastered a chunk of fundamental knowledge or worse, moved on to a more complex procedure when still struggling with basics.

Since the kids are both far ahead in their basic math requirements we’ve decided to shift gears in emphasis. We are hitting language learning hard this year. Together we are all learning German as well as improving the children’s Spanish.
I believe it’s ideal for cognitive development for children to be able to communicate in three languages and historically this has been the baseline for the children of upper class Whites. This does not include the knowledge of the basic prayers in Latin.
In the future Spanish will greatly help with their understanding of Latin and German helps deepen our understanding of English.

The body is a machine everyone should seek to understand. You would be surprised at the choices your children will make when they understand the basics. We start with the skeletal and muscular systems but also basic nutritional facts.

The sooner these decisions come from the child the better. Parenting becomes easier when the child does not feel bombarded with pointless rules and limitations but rather understands why these choices will lead to better outcomes.
Of course mileage will vary as some children have a greater or lesser instinct with regard to delaying gratification and seeking better long term outcomes at the expense of denying themselves in the moment but all children benefit from knowing these things to some extent.

Love living in the foothills. Snow this late in the season probably means the orchard crop is ruined as the blooms had already come in but it’s always a special treat for the kids to see their home covered in a thin blanket of snow.

Some of these things I have done intuitively though not optimized for peak efficiency. I am glad I found this while my children are still very young.
