When I first heard the news Friday that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) first cuts were to its Office of Civil Rights and Compliance, I cheered.

80% of the 200 employees will be laid off — about 75% laid off & about 5% taking buyouts.

The first thing that popped into my head was this: why does the IRS need a Civil Rights Office? The name of the office is new, formerly known as the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (DEI!)

The office was “tasked with upholding and protecting the civil rights of taxpayers.” It investigated discrimination against the IRS and complaints related to age, sex, color, disability, race, religion, and national origin discrimination against taxpayers.

Wow. Just wow. The office is no more, thanks to President Trump, and the other 20% of the employees in the office will be moved to the IRS Office of Chief Counsel.
