Glad Ēosturmōnaþ and Sigrblot!

Cloaked in oak leaves, plinking in the pines or a walk in the woods, the Wudufugol enjoys this Ostara season. From the wild north of BC, to the dense woodlands of the east, to the ponderosa sprawl of the southwest, we find solace in the wilderness. Gather your pack; to the woods you go heathen!

We would like to announce the formation of The Wudufugol, a collection of heathen hiking clubs spreading across the United States and Canada.

We felt a need to form this club due to the perceived lack of any other group that shares our values and passions for deep ecology, naturalism, the pursuit of an active lifestyle and most importantly to authentically worship the holy Gods of our Forefathers.

Our name is a word play of the famous Wandervogel, as we wanted to honor that generation of forest pilgrims.
Wudufugol is old English for “forest bird” particularly a bird of prey.

This channel will both document our pilgrims into nature, our heathen siðr, as well as being a medium to network with like minded Heathens as we see fit.

🌲 Hail to the Wudufugol 🌲

Response to Dave:

I didn't say this world doesn't matter. It does. The material benefit of an action or technology needs to be weighed against the spiritual, and vice versa.

I'm yet to see any evidence that use of AI is going to prevent all of the 'losing' you speak of. Your argument seems to be that AI will make us rich, and then we win. That isn't a foregone conclusion, but let's say it is - what are we losing, spiritually and culturally, to achieve that 'victory'? I see no concern in your post for the spiritual and cultural cost.

'Folk Futurism' makes millions unemployed and it's just assumed that they'll be living a life of leisure, as though the System that birthed AI is under our control and won't exploit the situation to the detriment of our folk. That's a monumental assumption, my friend.

'Our ancestors were buried in ships with swords and spears. [...] It’s the equivalent of getting buried in an Escalade with an AR-15 and wearing an iPhone necklace.'

It's not though. Each ship, sword and spear was built uniquely by hand, by a master craftsman. Production-line Escalades, AR-15s and Chinese iPhones may be excellent in their design, but represent the death of human craftsmanship; a gods-given skill.

There's a fundamental difference between tools that help one to create, and technologies that create for you. And although the emergence of generative AI may cause us to reassess many of the technologies we accepted, it is important to note the watershed moment that AI represents.

Ultimately, I do not believe our Pagan ancestors would consider AI anything other than a Thurs-born abomination, and I believe our gods are distraught that so many of their children are welcoming it.

To a large extent, we can only speculate. I don't think you or I are going to change our stance on this, and it will probably become a sizeable rift in the Heathen community.

In frith.
Grandfather is blowing warm winds through his beard, driving winter out
I do believe the Gods will show themselves to you, guide one towards the intended direction of one's wyrd either through dreams or omens of various forms.
Þunorheald (Thors hold) is the culmination of multiple dreams and bizarre experiences. A holystead to the Thunder, a hearg built from stone and a birch weoh carved in his likeness.
This site over looks the land, a rising outcrop, his fortress and hold.
My old site is converted to a place of ancestoral worship, closed off to all but close family.

Mistletoe was once called Donnerbesen in Germany, meaning Thunder Broom (thunder besom). The name is shared with a stylised form of brickwork that was incorporated into Saxony houses designed protect against lightning strikes. The church later renamed this pattern teufelbesen or ‘devil’s broom’. Grimm stated that a kenning for donnerbesen was alpruthe ‘elf-rod’ whilst alpgeschoss ‘elf-shot’ was a kenning for the thunderbolt, which is somewhat different to the Anglo-Saxon idea that elf shot were the tiny flakes of flint arrows known to cause cramps and other inflictions.

A solid post worth reading by Dan Capp from The Fyrgen.

Modern Pagans should develop altars, form kinship networks via friends or family - or a combination of both - enabling group worship.

Create daily personal practices, read historical European literature and the source material on Paganism, and with a reverential eye, worship the Gods and your ancestors, coupling personal gnosis and divine revelation with an understanding of the attested sources.

I'm curious about Pagans who talk about 'winning'. I suspect they would elaborate by saying that they want Paganism to become the dominant religion. Dominant where? Nationally? Among their ethnic kin exclusively? Globally?

And which Paganism, exactly, should 'win'? Germanic? Celtic? Hellenistic? Should Icelandic Heathenry 'win', or should Anglo-Saxon? Mercian or Bernician?

It seems to me that to talk of Paganism 'winning' is to treat it like a political movement rather than an indigenous way of life. The aforementioned are merely questions; my real point is this...

Any 'winning' that comes by the indiscriminate use of technology is of the material kind. For a political movement, that might be okay. But for a religion/indigenous spirituality, equal (if not greater) consideration must be given to the spiritual, philosophical and cultural impact of technologies. Is it any wonder that critics accuse Folkish Paganism of being foremostly political when many Folkish Pagans act more like a political movement by prioritising material victory?

According to official history, in 2600-1500 BC, whilst the people of the Indus Valley were writing scriptures, the proto-Germanic people hadn't even discovered the runes. We were essentially illiterate until Christianity brought to us the technology of writing. Is that because we were so inferior, or did our ancestors choose not to adopt this technology?

Technological adoption can be beneficial, when the material benefits are weighed against the spiritual, cultural and physiological dangers. AI's proponents seem concerned solely with the material impact. That's not surprising in this godless modern age. But it is surprising when self-proclaimed religious people likewise pay no heed to the spiritual, cultural and physiological dangers.

So now you can produce visual propaganda in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile the hand withers, the mind atrophies, imagination fades, the exchange of energies (gift for a gift) principle is overlooked, the very purpose for which the gods gave us this life (to share in the act of creation, to nurture beauty, to forge powerful bonds of kinship, to exercise mind and body) is shunned. Worse still - those who adopt AI technology may be empowering Loki and the þursar (more on that in a future post).

Here in the mountain towns, woodlands and deserts of the southwest, the sun brings vigor to our spring-seeded endeavors. Long days of sweat and toil soon approach. We plan a pilgrimage toward the mountains and rivers to the east, seeking refuge from the unforgiving summer heat. Blessed is our fatherland in all of it’s diversity and unique landscapes. Hail the Wudufugol and Praise the Gods! 🌲🏔🌲

"The most central and irrational faith among people is the faith in technology and economical growth. Its priests believe until their death that material prosperity bring enjoyment and happiness - even though all the proofs in history have shown that only lack and attempt cause a life worth living, that the material prosperity doesn't bring anything else than despair. These priests believe in technology still when they choke in their gas masks."

It is imperative that we as Heathens make an argument against AI.
My friend Þorr Siðr makes a great point.

“The Gods are artisans. They shaped and prepared this realm for us, which required struggle and a great deal of violence to do. That was not an easy thing for them to do; what they made for us, was not easy to make. It took time and effort to do so. So, when someone uses this generative art and all its imperfections and imitation of reality, they don’t respect that struggle for creation that the Gods underwent at the beginning. In fact, it mocks their work, and that is why we must reject AI art.”
Found this six point rosiest ( Donderbezem ) on a farmers house in northern Wisconsin. Said he didn’t know what it was but that his grandmother had drawn them when he was a kid.

The church father Tertullian asked "What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?" and the Anglo-Saxon monk Alcuin asked "What has Ingeld to do with Christ?" Tertullian believed that heresy began with Greek philosophy and likewise Alcuin believed that Germanic heroes such as Ingeld were blasphemous distractions to Christian faith. Both held similar beliefs that pre-Christian teachings and heroic legends should be dismissed and ignored.

However these may be early examples of the 'Celebration Parallax.' Indeed, what does Athens have to do with Jerusalem? What does Ingeld have to do with Christ? What does Israel and its history have to do with the European peoples?

AI generated images are dishonest theft.
AI generated images can only be generated after they have downloaded and copied images from artists. No artists were even given a choice as to whether they wanted to be a part of the amalgamation or not. AI companies intentionally used living artists on social media in relative secret while rejecting the use of public domain art.

The Kvinneby Amulet;
An 11th century bronze amulet from Kvinneby, Sweden, bears the runic inscription;
“Here I carve(d) protection for you, Bófi, with/to you is certain. And may the lightning hold all evil away from Bófi. May Þórr protect him with that hammer which came from out of the sea. Flee, evil spirit! You (will) get nothing from Bófi. The gods are under him and over him.”
As for the part about Mjolnir coming out of the sea, Stone Age axe-hammers were known to wash up on shores after storms, and became associated with the cult of Thor, as well as Ukko in Finland. Neolithic axes were kept in homes to protect from evil spirits and lightning strikes.
