Japanese Doctor Urges Continued International Aid for Myanmar Earthquake Victims

Yangon, 16 April 2025 – A Japanese physician who provided medical assistance to survivors of the recent devastating earthquake in Myanmar has appealed to the international community to continue offering support, as the region continues to struggle with the aftermath.

Dr. Igarashi Yutaka, a physician from the Advanced Critical Care Center of Nippon Medical School Hospital in Japan, made the appeal during an interview with Japanese public broadcaster NHK.

Dr. Igarashi arrived in Mandalay on April 4 as part of Japan’s emergency disaster relief team. During his mission, he provided urgent medical care to individuals who suffered injuries such as bone fractures caused by building collapses and rescue operations.

“Some people were unable to seek immediate medical attention because they were preoccupied with taking care of their families,” Dr. Igarashi said. “It was only after their injuries worsened that they came to receive treatment.”

According to Dr. Igarashi, many residents in Mandalay are still living outdoors more than two weeks after the quake, exposing them to cold weather and increasing the risk of infectious diseases such as diarrhea. He also reported a rise in chronic pain cases, particularly lower back and leg pain, among survivors.

His team treated over 100 patients per day, and he noted that some individuals who lost loved ones are also in need of psychological support.

Despite the withdrawal of some foreign medical teams, Dr. Igarashi emphasized the continued need for international aid until local medical institutions can resume normal operations.

PDF Forces Attack Power Substation Amid Post-Earthquake Electricity Shortages

March 31, 2025 - Naypyidaw

Militants from the People’s Defense Force (PDF) attacked a power substation in Salin Township, Magway Region, early Monday morning, as Myanmar continues to grapple with electricity shortages following last week’s devastating earthquake, according to a statement from the country’s information team.

The attack took place around 6:00 AM at the Ta Nyaung substation, located approximately 5.5 kilometers northwest of Salin town. Security forces engaged the assailants in a firefight after the militants opened fire with the arms. The attackers reportedly retreated following the clash, and no casualties were reported.

This incident comes in the wake of a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28 at 12:51 PM local time, causing widespread power outages. The government has been working to restore electricity while also conducting disaster relief operations for affected communities.

The statement said that PDF groups are exploiting the post-disaster situation to carry out sabotage operations. The government claims that the militants are 'disrupting recovery efforts through various destructive means,' while civilians continue to struggle with ongoing hardships.

Authorities continue efforts to repair the damaged substation as blackouts persist across multiple townships in the region. The security situation remains tense as restoration work progresses.

Myanmar to Celebrate Thingyan Festival in a Solemn Manner Amid Earthquake Tragedy
April 1, 2025

In light of the devastating earthquake that has struck multiple regions across Myanmar, the traditional Thingyan festival will be celebrated this year in a subdued, peaceful manner. The State Administration Council (SAC) announced that the festivities, usually marked by vibrant entertainment and public celebrations, will instead focus on cultural traditions without singing, dancing, or other forms of entertainment.

The earthquake has resulted in significant casualties, injuries, and widespread damage in areas such as Nay Pyi Taw, Sagaing, Bago, Magway, Mandalay, and Shan State. Given the national mourning for those affected, this year’s Thingyan will be observed with respect and reverence, as communities across the country prioritize recovery and support for the victims over festive activities.

April 6, 2025

YANGON — U.S.-based humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) has received official approval from Myanmar’s State Administration Council to begin large-scale meal distribution for communities affected by the recent earthquake.

WCK, known globally for its rapid-response food relief efforts, is launching an initiative to provide daily nutritious meals to those impacted by the disaster. Preparations for cooking and distribution are already underway, a source close to the organization told YMG.

The organization plans to distribute approximately 8 million meal boxes, each consisting of 150 grams of rice, 150 grams of vegetables, 150 grams of protein, and a bottle of water, in line with WCK’s nutritional guidelines. In addition, participating chefs and food preparers will receive training and certification, ensuring quality and food safety standards are met.

“WCK is committed to supporting Myanmar communities with nutritious meals while creating economic opportunities,” the source added.

Myanmar Earthquake Leaves 2.5 Million Tons of Debris; UNDP Calls for Urgent Recovery Efforts

Yangon, 15 April 2025 - The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that recently struck Myanmar has left behind an estimated 2.5 million tons of debris—equivalent to approximately 125,000 truckloads—according to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Yangon.

The damage assessment, conducted through advanced remote sensing technology, revealed extensive destruction across affected areas. In a press release, UNDP Myanmar highlighted that more than 10,000 homes and public buildings have been either significantly damaged or completely destroyed. Additionally, 128 healthcare facilities have sustained major damage, severely hampering the delivery of critical medical services to those in need.

UNDP noted that approximately 1.6 million buildings are located in zones exposed to seismic intensity level 7 or higher. Many of these structures were not built to withstand such powerful tremors, raising concerns about future earthquake resilience.

To carry out the assessment, UNDP integrated satellite-derived building damage classifications—categorized as destroyed, damaged, or possibly damaged—using data from UNOSAT and Copernicus. These were further combined with Microsoft’s building footprint data and structural data from the Global Human Settlement Layer, including building height and floor counts.

Myanmar Military (Tatmadaw) Declares 21-Day Ceasefire for Earthquake Relief

April 2, 2025

The Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) has announced a 21-day temporary ceasefire from April 2 to April 22, 2025, citing the need to support relief and reconstruction efforts in the wake of a devastating earthquake.

In a four-point statement issued by the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, the Tatmadaw said the ceasefire was declared to express sympathy for affected citizens, facilitate humanitarian aid, and ensure stability during the recovery period.

The Tatmadaw urged ethnic armed groups and other armed organizations to adhere to the ceasefire by refraining from disrupting public transportation routes, harming civilians or their property, attacking security forces, or engaging in activities such as recruitment and territorial expansion. The statement warned that any violations would prompt countermeasures to protect the public.

Since December 2018, the Tatmadaw has declared 22 ceasefires in efforts to promote national peace. In a separate initiative, Myanmar’s State Administration Council extended an invitation for political dialogue on September 26, 2024, as part of ongoing efforts to address political conflicts.

The ceasefire announcement comes amid growing humanitarian concerns following the earthquake, which has caused significant casualties and infrastructure damage across the country.
