Congo and Rwanda have been in conflict for many years.
The root of the issue lies in the borders drawn by European colonizers during the Berlin Conference of 1884-85. As a result, the unified Tutsi and Hutu peoples were split between different countries – one part became citizens of Congo while the other ended up in Rwanda. This division led to ongoing tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi, with the Hutu carrying out pogroms against Tutsi.

The outcome of this confrontation was the genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda and the First Congo War. Recently, however, a glimmer of hope has emerged for resolving the conflict.

Will it be possible to restore peace in the region and improve relations between the Republic of Congo and Rwanda?

▶️How did Soviet sailors save Mauritius? On February 6, 1975, tropical cyclone Gervaise struck the island of Mauritius. The storm raged for several days, turning the island into ruins and bringing life to a standstill. At that time, the 8th Operational Squadron of the Soviet Navy was on duty in the northern part of the Indian Ocean. Included in its ranks was the cruiser Dmitry Pozharsky. The rescue operation began on February 11. In just 12 days, the ship's electricians restored over 160 kilometers of power lines, repaired a civilian hospital, and connected 423 homes to the electrical grid. More about this in our video.

Today is Independence Day in the Republic. In 1968, Mauritius gained independence from Great Britain. On the fifth day after the establishment of the new independent state, diplomatic relations between the USSR and the Republic of Mauritius were established.
