ArcoLinux is shutting down after eight years

ArcoLinux, an Arch-based Linux distribution founded by Erik Dubois in 2017, is shutting down after eight years because he's nearing 60 and now doesn't have the same mental sharpness/stamina.

All the projects, including Arcoinstall, Carli, Alci, Ariser, tools, apps, scripts, etc. are ending. A transition package is being provided which will convert your current ArcoLinux installation to an Arch Linux installation, and support will be provided till July 1st, 2025.

All the websites, code, videos and documentation will remain online for others to learn, fork or remix.

NVIDIA PhysX and Flow libraries are now fully open source

NVIDIA has released its PhysX physics engine and Flow simulation tool as fully open-source under the permissive BSD 3 license.

With over 500 CUDA kernels powering features such as rigid body dynamics, fluid simulation, and deformable objects, GPU PhysX represents one of the most advanced real-time simulation use cases of CUDA and GPU programming. We hope this release will be a valuable resource for learning, experimentation, and development across the community.

In addition, we’re also open-sourcing the full GPU compute shader implementation of the Flow SDK, our real-time, sparse grid–based fluid simulation library.

Releasing the kernel source code will allow game developers to create optimized PhysX and Flow variants, while modders could use it to adapt legacy PhysX for unsupported RTX 50 GPUs via compatibility layers.

Microsoft is redesigning the Windows BSOD, and it might change to black

Microsoft is overhauling the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) as seen in Windows 11 Insider build, to align with Windows 11 design principles. The color might change to black in the stable release. It's not clear if it will remain black in the stable release.

It’s the first major change to the BSOD since Microsoft added a sad face to the screen in Windows 8. This new design includes the BSOD error or faulty driver, and simply states “your device ran into a problem and needs to restart.”

Windows Insiders can currently test it but it will appear green before it's shipped as a black or blue screen.

My experience in 7Hz G1, short review only

This is by far the best budget IEMs I've heard for 35$, considering the v-shaped tuning of it.

How's the Soundstage?
"The clear, evident and powerful presence of the macro detail and brighter elements that stand out in the foreground is superimposed on the micro detail in the background."
It is vivid in terms of gaming, but kind of aggressive into guns, I can tell. I still prefer KZ PR2 for playing VALORANT and CS2.

If you're into EDM, then this is what I can recommend. Sibilance is way too aggressive though, you might not like it. EQ it for your liking.

The eartips? It's good enough, I can keep it. Fits right in my ears. The size? Kind of big through my ear canal, it hurts me sometimes.

Overall tuning? Energetic, and technical low-end. Not balanced, but still powerful.

You can now officially unlock the bootloader of your Rabbit R1

It has been made possible to unlock the bootloader on rabbit R1 officially since 20th March 2025 by putting it into developer mode. However, putting R1 on developer mode permanently voids the device's warranty.

To put R1 in developer mode, you must contact customer support, and then use the Rabbit R1 Flash Tool to get into fastboot and unlock the bootloader. You can revert to rabbitOS at any time.

Currently, the custom ROM available for R1 is CipherOS by Aryan Sinha, whom rabbit asked to open source their kernel as well. Aryan worked with the rabbit team to enable stuff on R1 that wasn't possible before, like enabling calling, Native Camera Control, etc., converting the R1 to a fully functional phone.

Microsoft is removing the script used to avoid Microsoft Account in Windows 11

Microsoft has removed the BypassNRO.cmd script in its latest Windows 11 Insider Dev build, that previously enabled users to bypass the Microsoft Account setup requirement, in order to "enhance security and user experience."

This change will likely be pushed to production versions within weeks.

However, Microsoft has not yet removed the BypassNRO Registry value, so this command can be used to skip Microsoft account during setup:
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE /v BypassNRO /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f shutdown /r /t 0”

Meta goes to trial to avoid a breakup of Instagram and WhatsApp

On Monday, Meta will face the Federal Trade Commission in a legal fight that could reshape the social media landscape.

Over the next two months, the US government will make its case that the company’s 2012 acquisition of Instagram and 2014 acquisition of WhatsApp squashed potential threats to its dominance.

Meta, which went by the name of Facebook at the time, will defend itself by arguing that it helped grow those acquisitions into large businesses used by billions of people while facing plenty of competition along the way.

Apple is working on their most affordable laptop yet: MacBook Lite

Apple is working on the MacBook Lite, its most affordable laptop, to compete with Chromebooks. The leaks show that it will have a minimum of 64GB eMMC storage (upgradable to 512GB) with no SSD Option and 4GB RAM (max 12GB).

The base price is not confirmed, but it could be around $599. However, the main drawback is that macOS won’t be pre-installed, and users must purchase a separate $200 license. Apps would not be pre-installed and can be chosen during setup.

There will probably be no TouchID, but this isn't confirmed yet. MacBook Lite is targeted for students and budget buyers.

Vivaldi bundles Proton VPN into its web browser

Vivaldi's desktop browser now integrates Proton VPN, providing a built-in VPN for enhanced privacy. This feature is currently only available on the desktop version of the Vivaldi browser.

The free version allows users to connect to servers in five randomly selected countries. Vivaldi users can also upgrade to a paid version of Proton VPN.

As governments and users alike reassess their relationship with tech, especially in light of escalating geopolitical tensions, there has been a huge increase in demand for independent, non-aligned, and values-driven solutions. Europe needs European alternatives. In fact, everybody deserves European alternatives. And with Vivaldi and Proton, you’re getting exactly that.

Ping Browser: Just a Brave rebrand, or something actually new?

The Ping Browser, which emerged as a second-place winner in India’s Web Browser Development Challenge, is now facing accusations of being just a Brave Browser rebrand while receiving ₹75 lakhs in government funding. The "Atmanirbhar" initiative aimed at developing local technology sparked a controversy that initiated discussions about innovation practices, ethical standards, and taxpayer money usage.

TX and their team (Google Document), including @_mostwanted002_, @eshwnsingh, and @0xcowsecurity, accused Ping Browser of being a rebranded version of Brave Browser, an open-source browser focused on privacy. Their research revealed that Ping’s installer, "ping_installer (1).exe" contains files like "brave.exe" and "chrome_proxy.exe," with a directory structure being ditto same as Brave’s.

Ping’s GitHub repository, "ping-browser/ping-core," is a public fork of Brave’s "brave-core," with commits showing minimal changes like syncing with Brave’s updates and adding features such as a PDF signer and parental control extension. They didn't even make the repositories private. This "white-labelling" violates the competition’s spirit, with TX calling the ₹75 lakhs prize a "waste of hard-earned taxpayer’s money." This also violates Brave's terms of use.

Ping Browser is linked to FutureFlare Technologies LLP, its parent company, registered in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, at a farm address, as per its business profile on Falcon Ebiz. The company which has been active for about a year lists three directors, including Uday Bansal and his parents showing it operates as a family business. Despite its registration in Ghaziabad, Ping claims its headquarters are in Bengaluru, a hub for tech innovation. So fishy, lol.

Uday Bansal, identified as Ping’s founder responded to the allegations on LinkedIn. In replies, Bansal attributed the issue to an executable path bug causing conflicts with Brave, which he said is being fixed. He defended Ping’s compliance with the MPL-2.0 license (sections 3.2 and 3.3) and highlighted added features: Parental Controls, AI Summarizer & Rephraser, Hardware Token-Based Signatures, and Indian Root Certificate Support. Bansal even mentioned the video tour of Ping (attached) to demonstrate its functionality, comparing its development to Brave’s evolution on Chromium.

Uday Bansal also got a shoutout from his cousin brother Rachit Agarwal who works at Wormhome, a crypto firm. Rachit mentioned how they worked on probable startups and sought VC funding for a crypto payment and a T-shirt brand.

UPDATE: The funds of the prizes (₹75 lakhs for Team Ping and other prizes) have not been released as of 23rd March 2025.

Microsoft: Windows 'inetpub' folder created by security fix, don’t delete

Microsoft has confirmed that an April 2025 Windows security update is creating an empty inetpub folder. Microsoft has warned not to delete this folder, even if Internet Information Services (IIS) isn't active.

This update addresses CVE-2025-21204 which lets low‑privilege local attackers abuse symbolic links and perform/manipulate file management operations as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM.

According to some users, the update fails if the C:\inetpub folder already exists. The folder, if deleted, can be recreated by enabling IIS in Windows Features.

WhatsApp Will Soon Block Media Saving and Chat Exports for Better Privacy

The latest WhatsApp beta version 2.25.11.2 for Android has a new Advanced chat privacy feature, which blocks anyone trying to export a chat, showing a pop-up instead. With this enabled, media shared won't be saved on the recipient’s device automatically, handy for sensitive photos or videos.

It is not sure if this feature blocks screenshots or manually saving the file.

It will also let everyone know that you have turned on advanced chat privacy, whether it’s a one-on-one thread or a group chat.

France fines Apple €150M for “excessive” pop-ups that let users reject tracking

France has imposed a €150 million fine on Apple because its App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework requires third-party publishers to get "double consent" for tracking, while Apple's own data collection only needs one pop-up.

This asymmetry is seen as making third-party app use overly complex and harming small publishers who rely on advertising revenue. This fine doesn't mandate immediate changes, leaving room for future adjustments. Also, investigations into ATT are ongoing in Germany, Italy, Poland, and Romania.

A Win for Encryption: France Rejects Backdoor Mandate

The French National Assembly on March 20, 2025, voted against Article 8 from an anti-drug trafficking bill that would have gutted end-to-end encryption. The proposal required messaging platforms such as Signal and WhatsApp to implement backdoor access through a "ghost participant" model for encrypted communications.

The Assembly made privacy its top priority achieving a major victory. The EU's Chat Control proposal represents one of many similar measures that continue to exist globally. The presence of backdoors in systems creates vulnerabilities that cybercriminals can exploit.
