Psalm 94 v 1,2,3

1 O LORD of vengeance, show Thy glory;
Judge of the earth, call all before Thee.
Rise up, reveal Thy justice, LORD,
And give the proud their just reward!
Thine is the vengeance, Thine the might;
Put Thou my enemies to flight.

2 How long yet shall the wicked flourish,
The godless all their evil nourish?
They bluster and they boast aloud;
Of all their misdeeds they are proud.
They crush Thy people in their rage,
And they afflict Thy heritage.

3 They slay the widow, and they curse me;
They kill the alien without mercy
And put to death the fatherless.
All those who trust Thee they oppress;
They say, “The LORD, He does not see;
The God of Jacob, where is He?”

"The most spectacular rise was among young white British men. Only 3% of 18 to 34-year old white British men attended church in 2018. Today that figure is 18%."

Mikael Agricola (1510 – 9 April 1557) 🇫🇮

Bishop of Turku and Reformer. The founder of literary Finnish, the first Lutheran bishop of Finland, who published a Finnish primer (c. 1543) and a translation of the New Testament from Greek into Finnish (1548). (The first Finnish translation of the whole Bible was published in 1642.)

The original statue of Mikael Agricola in Vyborg by Emil Wikström, photographed on the day of its reveal on 21 June 1908. The statue was lost in the Winter War.
Martin Luther's appearance before the Diet of Worms, Germany, 1521.

"On April 17, 1521, Luther went before the Diet. In response to questioning, he admitted that the books displayed before the court were his, but, when asked to repudiate them, he requested time to consider the question. The next day, again before the assembled Diet, Luther refused to repudiate his works unless convinced of error by Scripture or by reason. Otherwise, he stated, his conscience was bound by the Word of God. According to tradition, he said, “Here I stand; I can do no other.” Disorder broke out at the conclusion of Luther’s refusal to recant, and the emperor dismissed the Diet for the day."

Every Sunday part of the Catechism is posted. This week we have Lord's day 17 from the Heidelberg catechism.

Lord’s Day 17

45.Q. How does Christ’s resurrection benefit us?

A. First, by His resurrection He has overcome death, so that He might make us share in the righteousness He won for us by His death. Second, by His power we too are already now resurrected to a new life. Third, Christ’s resurrection is a guarantee of our glorious resurrection.

Remember your death brethren. What is your life compared to eternity? Spend it wisely.

John Winthrop (born January 22 [January 12, Old Style], 1588, Edwardstone, Suffolk, England—died March 26, 1649, Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony [U.S.]) was an English lawyer best known as the Puritan leader of the first large wave of the Great Migration of Puritans from England to North America in 1630 CE and governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony (founded in 1628 CE) which they settled and expanded upon, and the founder of the city of Boston. Winthrop is also known for the conflicts between his government and religious dissenters such as Roger Williams (l. 1603-1683 CE), Anne Hutchinson (l. 1591-1643 CE), and Thomas Hooker (l. 1586-1647 CE), who were expelled by the colony and settled the regions now known as Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The Third Part: Of Thankfulness
Lord’s Day 32
Q86. Since then we are delivered from our misery merely of grace, through Christ, without any merit of ours, why must we still do good works?
A. Because Christ, having redeemed and delivered us by his blood, also renews us by his Holy Spirit after his own image; that so we may testify by the whole of our conduct our gratitude to God for his blessings, and that he may be praised by us; also, that every one may be assured in himself of his faith by the fruits thereof; and that by our godly conversation others may be gained to Christ.

Q87. Cannot they then be saved who, continuing in their wicked and ungrateful lives, are not converted to God?
A. By no means; for no unchaste person, idolater, adulterer, thief, covetous man, drunkard, slanderer, robber, or any such like, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Lord’s Day 33
Q88. Of how many parts does the true conversion of man consist?
A. Of two parts: of the mortification of the old, and the quickening of the new man.

Q89. What is the mortification of the old man?
A. It is a sincere sorrow of heart that we have provoked God by our sins, and more and more to hate and flee from them.

Q90. What is the quickening of the new man?
A. It is a sincere joy of heart in God through Christ, and with love and delight to live according to the will of God in all good works.

Q91. But what are good works?
A. Only those which proceed from a true faith, are performed according to the law of God, and to his glory; and not such as are founded on our imaginations or the institutions of men.
