Hot Cross Buns are very much a part of the Irish and UK Easter tradition. They are served to commemorate Christ’s suffering on the cross (hence the cross marking on the bun).
☘️ Fastnet Rock
Have you heard the story of The Teardrop of Ireland? 💧
Off the coast of West Cork sits Fastnet Rock. It cuts a solitary figure in the wild waters of the Atlantic.
Fastnet earned its name, The Teardrop of Ireland, as it was the last part of Ireland that 19th-century Irish emigrants saw before reaching America. Most would never see Ireland again...
The lighthouse at Fastnet is the second on this spot. The first was constructed in 1853/4, but proved too weak, so the one we see today was erected in its place. As lightkeeper Noel Crowley noted: “The big seas would come sailing up over the entire building like the field of horses in the Grand National. Up, up, up and over .
Born in Dublin in 1887, Joseph Plunkett wrote many poems of rare, mystical force. Plunkett was one of the signers of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic and was imprisoned by the English army. He was executed in 1916 for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising. Shortly before his execution on May 4, he married his fiancée, Grace Gifford, in the jail’s chapel. Plunkett was 28 years old.

Because of his great love for the Incarnate Word—and the Word’s close connection to all created things—Plunkett saw Christ’s destiny and great love as forever entwined with this earth and this universe.

I See His Blood Upon the Rose

"I see His blood upon the rose
And in the stars the glory of His eyes,
His body gleams amid eternal snows,
His tears fall from the skies.
I see His face in every flower;
The thunder and the singing of the birds
Are but His voice—and carven by his power
Rocks are his written words. All pathways by His feet are worn,
His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea,
His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn,
His cross is every tree.”

During the Penal times in Ireland, when it was illegal to be Catholic, the faithful clung to their rosaries and refused to cave. On failing to subdue them in the 17th century, Oliver Cromwell wrote to his superiors, “All is not well with Ireland yet. You gave us the money, you gave us the guns. But let me tell you that every house in Ireland is a house of prayer, and when I bring these fanatical Irish before the muzzles of my guns, they hold up in their hands a string of beads, and they never surrender.” It was the power of the Rosary that kept Ireland Catholic in spite of centuries of persecution.
