Many parents fear giving authority to their children over their other children. When you homeschool, a child’s idea of leadership comes from you.
The instinct to bully, take advantage of, or to be cruel is something generally learned from hierarchies observed in public school settings with kids from broken homes.
When there is clear hierarchy and authority this actually creates more love between siblings. Just as having a clear hierarchy between man and wife make marriage more peaceful and peace is fertile soil for love to mature and deepen.

When we got back from jiu jitsu we found Bella had a little fever and was not feeling well. I put Leo in charge of her. He spent an hour and a half nursing her. He kept a moist towel on her forehead and took her temperature. Kept her hydrated and brought her the stuffed things she liked best.

I found out that my 10-year-old and my 4-year-old have a secret hand shake. I love being a close-knit family. 🥰 One of the many advantages of homeschooling is that my older kids have the opportunity to develop closer relationships with their younger siblings than if they spent most of their day outside the home.

Leo is learning the Saint Crispin’s day speech from Shakespeare’s “Henry v”.
Faced with long odds King Henry rallies his troops and encourages them to fight against 5-1 odds.
It is probably one of the most memorable and moving speeches in European history and probably my favorite Shakespearean monologue.
After a week or so of practice I think he will be ready to do it justice when performed a month from now with a little more work.

Some morning drills. Training jiu jitsu one on one at home has really helped the acquisition of skills but more importantly the frequent step by step learning process gets children to get used to listening and in particular helps develop thinking in children who are naturally more kinesthetic learners.

Todays curriculum included the regular reading and math periods but also dirtbike riding, back day, and jiu jitsu drills. The great part about having our own mats is we can take time to drill things we don’t see in regular training like Seoi Nage and other throws more commonly seen in judo.

The reason we make excuses for ourselves is to give ourselves comfort when we fail or fall short. The habit serves only to make people comfortable with failure and wherever a man is comfortable he is likely to stay.

Every effort should be made to school your own children. A kid in public school probably achieves about 20% of their potential or less. Between being influenced by the culture of others and children of broken homes (who are probably the majority).
In a worst case scenario someone will sexually abuse your kid. There is no upside. Your children can be socialized in training for combat sports (something every kid should be forced to partake in for at least five years as part of their curriculum.)

First gi class from home today with both kids. We went over baseball bat chokes from side control and darce chokes with the lapel.
While the gi is a durable tool made to be abused, the reality is a lot of the chokes and throws that work in gi work on most clothes, even t-shirts and are useful not only for competition but for self defense as well.

I am very specific about the way I parent, but I embrace and accept this reality. The biggest reason to organize is because at a certain age your children require peer affirmation of your ideals and values for them to truly sink in.
It doesn’t matter how based you are, if you don’t create an environment that affirms your beliefs and ideals.

Brand new people will come into a gym and be taught arm bars, triangles, and other attacks before they know how to get out of pins or move from position to position properly with economy of movement.
Children who still use their fingers (even if quickly) should not move on to harder operations. The inability to multiply quickly makes fractions and algebra a nightmare for children. Trying to read chapter books when children are still sounding out words reduces reading comprehension to almost nothing.
For beginners/children this cannot be done in a group setting. An instructor has to be available to monitor the proper understanding of these things so that time is not wasted reviewing where kids have mastered a chunk of fundamental knowledge or worse, moved on to a more complex procedure when still struggling with basics.

Today my kindergartener was looking at a bar with 25s on each side. After a few second he did the math and said that’s “95” lbs by adding 25+25 =50 and then 45 + 50=95
Most kids that age can barely add on their fingers. This is not because my children are natural born geniuses, it’s because we invest in their potential.
Our children are capable of so much WE are capable of so much. But we are trapped inside of a system that prizes mediocrity because the mediocre make complacent slaves. So it bludgeons children, intentionally stunts them in so many ways.
Do what you can to home school. Don’t let them lobotomize your children with their social justice curriculum.

Kids are sick so I have to keep them from training for a couple days but at least we can train and study together at home.
When kids are in public school you have to either contaminate a bunch of other families, or pull your kids out and have them be unproductive for a couple days. That adds up over a 12 year period.

Today we hit some cardio, worked out our shoulders, and did a good amount of drilling on the mats.
You can’t control talent or genetics, it is unlikely that you will be born one of those rare prodigies that achieves much without effort. The only thing we can really control is how much work we put in, and in the grand scheme of things many great men are the product not of extraordinary talent but extraordinary effort.
Whatever gifts we are given by God it is our duty to develop them for the benefit of our communities and for the glory of God.

This paper has been one of the more fascinating papers I’ve read on how children learn math. It talks about the importance of automaticity (direct recall without using strategies to derive answers) in order for kids to have success in higher math.
Some of these things I have done intuitively though not optimized for peak efficiency. I am glad I found this while my children are still very young.
