Nicholas was almost assassinated with his family even before his reign. In March 1887, Tsar Alexander III, the Empress, and their 5 children (Nicholas, George, Michael, Xenia, Olga) were on a train heading to Gatchina where a group of reds were arrested for carrying bombs which they intended to throw at the Imperial Family. The terrorists were hanged, one of which was Alexander Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin's brother).

The address (petition) of the peasants regarding their Emperor, December, 1917:

"During the time of the Emperor none of this happened, and now every day there is murder, robbery and nowhere we can complain. That's why we now have freedom, so that all of you who thought of this should die. Please, greet Batushka Nikolai. We pray for him, to return to the throne. I and many others, many of us, want to vote for Batushka - Emperor Nikolai, during the time of whom we, the poor, were not touched by anyone and everything was available and cheap, and there was a lot of bread; and now with your new government only robbery and violence, and we have nowhere to complain... Is it possible that Tsar will not come back? Lord, reason with the people and return our Protector - the Emperor! "

"The Empress used to sit under a tree near the pond. Often guards would come up to her. One of them sat down next to her and began to speak to her. Her Majesty answered, and he questioned her on the public events. The Empress spoke to him at length on religious questions, and in spite of his revolutionary ideas, he seemed touched."

-Count Paul Benckendorff, Last Days at Tsarskoe Selo (book)
"The Royal Family led very prayerful lives, with frequent church attendance, and kept all the fasts of the Church strictly. Their contemporaries in high society for the most part did not keep these practices. Therefore they accused the Tsar of excessive zeal. It was the common people who continued to practice the Orthodox Christian way of life and who appreciated the piety of the Royal Family."
