Drone gamechanger? China launches massive 7,000km range UAV

The Jiu Tian is China’s new long-range jet-powered UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) with a maximum range of 7,000km and a flight altitude of up to 15,000 meters.

The jet can carry 1,000kg guided bombs, air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, anti-ship missiles and cruise missiles, and is capable of carrying up to 6 tons of ammunition and releasing up to 100 small drones.

It is expected to conduct its maiden flight mission by the end of June.

UK pauses negotiations with Israel on free trade

Britain has suspended negotiations with the Israeli government over a new free trade agreement.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy, speaking in the Commons in London on Tuesday, said: “We have suspended negotiations with this Israeli government on a new free trade agreement.
“We will be reviewing co-operation with them under the 2030 bilateral roadmap.The Netanyahu government’s actions have made this necessary.”
Concerning Gaza, Lammy added: "Blocking aid, expanding the war, dismissing concerns of friends and partners is indefensible and it must stop.”
Lammy also said that the Israeli ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, had been summoned to the Foreign Office.

It’s all about celebrating these magnificent creatures and highlighting the urgent need to protect these pollinators responsible for 75% of global food crop production.

Pollination is crucial for our ecosystems with nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depending, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination.

Present bee species extinction rates are 100 to 1,000 times higher than normal due to human impacts.

Pollination can contribute to solving problems related to the global food supply and eliminate hunger in developing countries.

Zelenskyy: Ukraine will not withdraw troops or surrender territory to Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stood firm on sovereignty in talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. Urging no decisions about Ukraine without Kyiv involvement, Zelenskyy discussed ceasefire options and U.S. sanctions against Russian actions.

In a second call with leaders from France, Italy, Finland, and EU’s Ursula von der Leyen, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s territorial integrity is non-negotiable. He declared, “No one will pull our troops from our own territory. It is my constitutional duty to protect Ukraine’s sovereignty.” He warned that Russia’s demands for Ukrainian withdrawal show no genuine desire for peace.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, whose forces control a fifth of Ukraine and are slowly advancing, has stood firm on his conditions for ending the conflict, including the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from four Ukrainian regions Russia claims.

'Narcocat' caught smuggling drugs into prison

Putting the “mew” into “drug mule”, this cat was caught carrying two packages of narcotics into Costa Rica’s Pococi Penitentiary.
Upon capturing the feline, the officers discovered and removed the packages, which contained 235.65 grams of marijuana, 67.76 grams of crack paste, and two sheets of paper for making tickets.

The drugs were confiscated, and the cat, nicknamed "Narcomichi" (Narco kitten) on social media, was handed over to the National Animal Health Service for health evaluation.

EU sanctions package number 17 on Russia
It’s 17 up for the EU after it approved a new sanctions package against Russia on Tuesday.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said: "More sanctions on Russia are in the works. The longer Russia wages war, the tougher our response."
The fresh sanctions involve blacklisting nearly 200 more tankers in Russia's "shadow fleet" in a bid to curtail Moscow's ability to export oil.
It also included imposing asset freezes and visa bans on dozens more Russian officials.
Brussels has already put a fresh package of measures on the table as leaders have threatened Moscow with "massive sanctions" for dragging its heels on a Ukraine ceasefire.

Global protests honor 77th Nakba anniversary

Hundreds of protests around the world have come together to commemorate the Palestinian "Nakba", or catastrophe.

The Nakba refers to the displacement of over 750,000 Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war after the end of the British Mandate and the creation of Israel.

Demonstrations were seen in several cities around the world, including London, Paris, New York, Madrid, Athens, and Mexico City where thousands of people took to the streets to express their support for Palestine.

Thousands of demonstrators also took to the streets of Basel to protest against Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest amid the ongoing attacks on Gaza.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine are “on the right track” and that Moscow is ready to work with Kyiv on a memorandum outlining a future peace accord.

Speaking after a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, Putin thanked him for supporting the resumption of direct talks between Russia and Ukraine. He said Trump acknowledged Moscow’s support for peace, but emphasized that “the key question was how to move towards peace.

“We have agreed with the president of the United States that Russia will propose—and is ready to work with the Ukrainian side on—a memorandum on a possible future peace accord,” Putin told reporters near the Black Sea resort of Sochi. “It would define a number of positions, such as principles of settlement and the timing of a possible agreement.”

Putin added that if appropriate agreements are reached, a ceasefire could be possible. The resumption of direct dialogue with Ukraine, he said, “gives reason to believe that we are generally on the right track.”

He also reiterated Moscow’s position: “The main thing for us is to eliminate the root causes of this crisis. We just need to determine the most effective ways to move towards peace.”

U.S. President Donald Trump said his call with Russia's President Vladimir Putin went very well and that Moscow and Kyiv "will immediately start negotiations" toward a ceasefire and end to the war.

Spain's PM says Israel should be excluded from Eurovision

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called for Israel's exclusion from international cultural events such as the song contest Eurovision, just as Russia was expelled after attacking Ukraine in 2022.
Sanchez, a long-time critic of Israel's policies in the occupied Palestinian territories, said culture was the most authentic and free way to express ideas and values.

"I believe that no one was shocked three years ago when Russia was asked to withdraw from international competitions after it invaded Ukraine and not participate, for example, at Eurovision. Therefore, Israel should not do so either," he said.

"We cannot allow double standards, not even in culture," he added.
The Israeli entry finished second in last weekend's Eurovision competition in Basel, just losing out to Austria.

WHO chief says 2 million starving in Gaza

The Gaza Strip is seeing an influx of casualties to a health system "already on its knees", WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tells the opening of the World Health Assembly, where he warned that two million people are "starving" in the Palestinian territory.

Tedros emphasised that the WHO, alongside other United Nations agencies, is prepared to deliver critical humanitarian assistance, including medical supplies, food, and other essentials, to alleviate suffering in the Palestinian territory. However, he stressed that these efforts are severely hampered by barriers to entry, with aid deliveries contingent on permissions and safe access.
