🇷🇴🚨⚡️ Acting-president, Ilie Bolojan, called another meeting of the National Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) on April 30th, to discuss Romania's role in the EU Joint Defense Plan

This CSAT meeting comes after the Ukrainian president, Vladimir Zelensky, with the support of the EU, rejected the most recent peace offer made by Donald Trump which suggested giving up political and legal control over Crimea which Zelensky still lays claim over, which led to Trump floating the idea of the U.S. abandoning the peace process altogether leaving the EU to support the Ukrainian war effort on its own, which obviously, means Romania will have to do more for Ukraine.

In a televised appearance this evening, Bolojan infirmed claims that the CSAT will discuss the upcoming elections, importantly mentioning that unlike the last time, this election campaign was "devoid" of foreign malicious interference.

This "lack" of foreign interference comes despite complaints made by the candidates Nicușor Dan and Victor Ponta, who said that their comment sections on the internet were flooded with bots and trolls.

🇷🇴🤝🇻🇦 April 26th 2025 was declared yesterday a "day of national mourning" for the deceased Pope Francis

This happened despite that Catholicism is the 3rd biggest Christian denomination in Romania with under 4% being members of the Catholic Church, with the majority of them being ethnic Hungarians.

Catholicism recorded a steep decline from the last census in 2011 to the new one in 2022 going from 5.4% to under 4%. (Neo)Protestant churches already overtook Catholicism in the early 2000s thanks to American missionaries and a high fertility rate among adherents of Protestant cults.

Overall, the number of Catholics in Romania declined by nearly 130k people in 11 years.

Orthodoxy still remains the largest religion with likely over 85% of the population being at least baptised in the Orthodox Church. Even though 73.4% stated Orthodoxy as their religion, the vast majority of the % who refuse to state it are Orthodox as well.

🇲🇩❌🇲🇩 Moldovan prosecutors placed a 60 day ban from leaving the country on Dmitri Constantinov, the president of the Gagauzian Popular Assembly.

Constantinov told journalists that the reason for the ban was because the Gagauzian Assembly voted the Executive Committee which the Moldovan Special Information Service (SIS) warned against doing.

The prosecutors also opened a criminal investigation on Constantinov's name but the charges against him have not been made public.

🟨🤝⚖️ AUR president, George Simion, supports the decision of the Ploiești Court of Appeals simply stating on Facebook:

”The only way to return to democracy, reestablish constitutional democracy and rule of law is by giving the 2nd round back”.

🟨🤝🇺🇸 Pro-PSD and pro-Crin Antonescu TV station, Antena3, published a contract between the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) and the American lobby firm, BGD Legal & Consulting claiming AUR has paid 1.5 million USD for George Simion's many appearances on Republican-aligned TV stations, podcasts & others.

Antena3 claims Simion is "purposefully damaging Romania's image" by not speaking highly of premier Marcel Ciolacu and the acting-president Ilie Bolojan and criticising the regime of mass-censorship instituted in the country to "protect" against "hybrid attacks" from Moscow.

This news was heavily promoted by the pro-Nicușor Dan G4Media site and the pro-Victor Ponta RomâniaTV TV station.

While AUR denied the veracity of the contract, claiming it was a hoax, the American company, BGD Legal & Consulting confirmed the veracity of the document but stated that it was a draft and that neither party signed it nor did any party fulfil its contractual obligations.

The real intent behind this "revelation" was to get the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) to start an investigation into AUR's finances a mere 10 days ahead of the presidential elections hoping to...? Signing lobby contracts with American PR firms is nothing out of the ordinary for Romanian politicians. Ion Iliescu all the way back in 1996 was the first to get American lobbyists to manage his presidential campaign. USR and Elena Lasconi did the same last year.

This story reflects the new reality of Romanian politics after the ousting of Călin Georgescu: a pathetic circus that is not enjoyable to watch with horrendous actors who never bring up something interesting to discuss and continue to fight over the little segment of the population who still believes in elections and that their vote matters.

The 2025 presidential elections are for the sole purpose of giving Crin Antonescu a veneer of popular ”support” and legitimacy internationally. This is who is supposed to win and the intel-state is ready to use every trick in the book to make sure he wins. Now they found an uninteresting story about Simion paying some American PR firm money for lobbying, like if Simion's voters are supposed to care. More stuff like this is being prepared for Nicușor Dan and Victor Ponta. Lasconi isn't considered a threat so she will be ignored

We are not legally allowed, not even in private, to endorse someone, so if you decide to go and vote, we will leave you to make your own conclusions. It would be interesting to see what happens if Crin Antonescu was to lose the 2nd round to any of the other candidates. Will they cancel the elections again and run them for a 3rd time?

🇷🇴🗳⚡️ The PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition have hired again the PR firm, Kensington Communications, to run ads for Crin Antonescu

Last year, Kensington Communications created the TikTok campaign of Călin Georgescu which was cited as a reason to cancel the 2024 presidential elections.

At the time, the PR firm said that their campaign was intended for the then president of PNL, Nicolae Ciucă, but that it was ”hijacked” by ”Russian bots” but the claims fell apart when it was discovered that the National Liberal Party, paid the PR firm the entirety of the contract never complaining of any ”hijacking”.

🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ The High Court of Cassation & Justice voided the decision of the Ploiești Court of Appeals, cancelling it.

🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ The Ploiești Court of Appeals who suspended the ruling of the Constitutional Court (CCR) regarding the cancellation of the 2024 presidential election is not the only Romanian court who was referred!

A retired judge called, on TikTok, called on her followers to contest the decision of the CCR and, as a result, over 100 suits have been registered over the country.

50 of them have been rejected by courts citing a lack of competence, others have been put on the desk of judges meaning that competence was indirectly acknowledged while others have neither been rejected nor accepted. The exception is the verdict of the Ploiești Court of Appeals from yesterday.

If more courts join the Ploiești Court of Appeals doesn't mean that the CCR's decision will be invalidated as the High Court of Cassation & Justice will void their rulings.

Its very important to remember that just two days ago the Parliament voted to cut the pensions of judges and prosecutors and forces them to retire at the age of 65 when most usually retired once they turned 50. Yesterday's verdict is likely a form of revenge from a judge because his retirement plans were ruined by the Parliament.

Remains to be seen if there will be other judges who will sympathise with the one from Ploiești and hand out similar rulings.

🇲🇩❌🇷🇺🇷🇺 Moldovan authorities are forbidding the public celebration of the victory of the Red Army on May 9th which marks 80 years since the fall of Berlin and Nazi Germany in 1945.

Instead, Chișinău sent a notice instructing all local councils and mayors to organise festivities, if needed, celebrating the ”Day of Europe” celebrated in the European Union which also commemorates the Fall of Berlin and Nazi Germany.

Reports that the Moldovan Army will not be participating this year are misleading because Moldovan Army hasn't partaken in the "Immortal Regiment" march for quite sometime already so 2025 is not unusual compared to previous years.

Active or retired Moldovan soldiers are not forbidden from participating in public gatherings but they will likely not be allowed to display their uniform any more.

The Socialist Party in the Republic of Moldova, the Communist Party in the Republic of Moldova and Ilan Shor's Victory Bloc are organising "Immortal regiment" marches in multiple cities and towns in Moldova.

🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ The Constitutional Court (CCR) itself appealed the decision of the Ploiești Court of Appeals, an unprecedented development for the Romanian judiciary!

In an unprecedented development, the Constitutional Court itself appealed the decision of judge Alexandru Vasile, despite the prosecutor representing the Public Ministry, having already appealed it beforehand.

Never in the 33 years of the existence of the CCR did the court itself appeal the decision of an ordinary court. (to be fair, we can't recall another incident when an ordinary court tried to overturn a decision of the CCR).

The CCR contradicts the court of appeals and says that it does not render administrative acts and has announced it asked the High Court of Cassation & Justice to publish a ruling reaffirming the CCR's "independence" and its "exclusive authority" over the electoral process noting that no judge is allowed to question the CCR's authority and rulings regarding elections.

The High Court of Cassation & Justice is on the case and already discussing the ruling with a verdict on the matter expected to come either tonight or tomorrow with the motivation soon after.

As one of the most brilliant jurists of the 20th century said:

"Sovereign is he who decides on the exception" — Carl Schmitt

Let's recall that yesterday politician after politician, government-paid influencers and every supporter of the PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition have come out to ask for judge Alexandru Vasile's head for publicly dissenting and undermining the little credibility the judiciary still enjoys with the public.

The minister of justice himself, Radu Marinescu, said that the May 2025 elections will continue as planned and that the 2nd round of the 2024 presidential elections is not coming back, which is a stretch because the plaintiff in the court case admitted by the Ploiești Court of Appeals never asked for the 2nd round back, instead asking for the suspension of the CCR's ruling from December 2024 and for financial compensation for being denied the right to vote.

In other circumstances, such a public pressure on a sitting judge would have been considered "interference in the justice system" and rightly condemned by the Superior Magistrates Council (CSM) and other judicial associations but not in this case.

🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ The judicial system in Romania is falling apart!

The motivation behind the ruling of the Ploiești Court of Appeals was published today and it is vicious in ripping apart the flimsy arguments made by the Constitutional Court back in December when it cancelled the 2024 presidential elections.

Judge Alexandru Vasile admits the suit, noting that the ruling of the CCR is not a simple ruling, but an administrative act with the force of a law (!!) because it affects an undetermined amount of people (all Romanian citizens who are eligible to vote), which means it can be censored by ordinary courts, it recognises that the CCR emitted that act in the position of a public authority exercising state authority and denied the right to vote of millions of Romanians by untimely cancelling the 2nd round of the 2024 presidential elections.

Alexandru Vasile further argues that the decision of the CCR wasn't an usual court decision because the principle of contradictorality was violated, with the CCR publishing its ruling without hearing the arguments of the other side, meaning the CCR didn't use a judiciary procedure but rather an administrative procedure, the administrative procedure being different from the judiciary procedure because administrative acts are unilaterally emitted by public authorities exercising state authority without notifying beforehand the parties who will be affected by the administrative act and without inviting the public to assist in the redaction of the administrative act (non-transparency).

The judge noted that the CCR violated the Constitution, notably it denied the sovereignty of the Romanian people, the right to vote and the impossibility to revoke administrative acts once they have taken effect, considering the fact that the CCR had already validated the 1st round and thus the 2nd round was cancelled without a clear motive.

The court noted that the plaintiff was denied the right to vote because the CCR cancelled her vote which she exercised by voting during the 1st round and was prevented from participating in the 2nd round through the untimely decision.

Alexandru Vasile goes even further and says that the CCR committed an abuse of power and overextended its attributions when it cancelled the elections by abusively interpreting art. 146 of the Constitution which says that the CCR can validate or invalidate the results but does not allow the CCR to cancel the elections. He further says that the CCR violated two other laws, 47/1992 and 370/2004, noting that the CCR cannot self-report and that it must be referred by someone, in writing and with a good motivation, with the law 370/2004 mentioning that the CCR can only be referred to by political parties (alliances etc.) and the presidential candidates, none of which reported to the CCR a violation.

The court noted that the Constitution in art. 146 says that the CCR's rulings are obligatory and produce effects only for the future, but the law 47/1992 which created the CCR distinguished between decisions, rulings and opinions, with the court of appeals distinguishing between decisions and rulings, noting that the CCR's act from December was not a ruling but a decision and thus art. 146 does not apply to it thus the CCR's decision can be suspended and overturned (!!).

📝: The arguments made the judge Alexandru Vasile are interesting from a legal standpoint. They are hard to combat outside of using the main argument invoked by politicians and supporters of the regime who simply pointed to the principle of militant democracy and the aphorism which summarises it best: The majority may be wrong - but the Constitutional Court is never wrong.

We think the most important development in this story is that we are beginning to see members of the system, of the state, dissenting in public, speaking out against the official narrative and actually trying to overturn it. This is not a good sign for the PSD-PNL-UDMR coalition who is hoping to govern at least 4 more years in the current form.

🇷🇴⚖️⚡️ The Ploiești Court of Appeals emitted a ruling suspending the Constitutional Court's (CCR) decision to cancel the 2024 presidential elections!

From a legal standpoint, the decision of the Ploiești Cour of Appeals is too little too late as, for one, the elections have already been cancelled new ones have been organised, for two, the decisions of the CCR are impossible to contest and overturn once they have been published.

This ”oversight” by lawmakers when they created the CCR back in 1992 was by design, as a backup in case an outsider like Călin Georgescu, had popular support and needed to be stopped.

The majority may be wrong - but the Constitutional Court is never wrong.
