Since his days as a youth, Mussolini had been an admirer of Lenin and considered Stalin a "fellow Fascist." He had called Stalin, at least up until 1938, a "cryptofascist". Not long after the signing of the Hitler-Stalin Pact in August 1939, Mussolini was overjoyed and praised Stalin for replacing bolshevism with a kind of "Slavonic Fascism". To some italians fascist intellectuals, Stalin's Bolshevism was moving towards a nationalized and socialist version of fascism.
