Happy 64th birthday to the Rhodesian Light Infantry; one of the finest fighting forces in modern history! 🇿🇼 🎂

Scope Saturday has returned once again to give us a momentary respite from the nonsense. Relax and enjoy!

My best guess is that this issue is from the late 70’s or early 80’s. Either way, this was definitely a welcome addition to a Rhodesian or South African’s mail call back in the day! 🇿🇼 🇿🇦
FICTION FRIDAY…
“Hold. Steady. Now!” Rob yelled into the cheap, walkie talkie. The range on these things wasn’t great but everybody in his unit, the Lincoln Larpers, was close enough to hear the order. As one, the thirty members of his company opened up on the convoy below. Captured AK’s, RPG’s, PKM’s, RPD’s, deer rifles, AR’s and grenades rained death down on the Soviet column that had been snaking its way north along County Road E-001 on the southern edge of the Sacramento Mountains, just southeast of Alamogordo. Rob emptied the magazine of his AKM and then dropped it long enough to press the detonator for the claymores they’d hidden along the road. As thousands of metal balls shredded infantry and lightly armored vehicles, he thanked God for those Green Berets and for the weapons and knowledge they’d passed on to them. It was paying off! Below, dozens of Soviets had already been cut down, multiple trucks were burning and a tank was on fire.
As good as things were going, the fight wasn’t one-sided. The 14.5mm heavy machine gun of the lead BTR-60 answered the ambush and cut down Matt and Corey Danforth who had been manning a heavy MG. Rob had seen it and it was a sight he’d never forget. The two brothers had been essentially vaporized by the heavy rounds. Further down the line other members of the unit had seen the two fall and answered with RPG’s. Six rockets streaked down towards the BTR with five finding their mark. The vehicle was ripped apart by the explosions and multiple Soviets bailed out, some missing limbs, others on fire but all doomed. A hail of rifle and machine gun fire made short work of them. Behind the BTR, dozens of infantry and dismounted vehicle crew fled back down the road the way they’d come. The Americans didn’t afford them any mercy and kept firing at them until they were all out of sight. Behind they left a dozen burning vehicles and dozens of dead comrades.
Rob gave the order to cease fire and slumped back against a rock. His hands were shaking and he felt like throwing up, but he and most of his band had survived their second major encounter with the enemy. They’d won and he wanted more. 🇺🇸 💥 🇷🇺

FICTION FRIDAY…
Rob wiped the lenses of his binocs and brought them back to his eyes, silently cursing himself for losing the lens caps. Far off in the distance through swirling dust clouds he could see the imposing silhouettes of tanks as they moved north from El Paso. They were heading straight for him and the tiny militia unit he commanded here in the Lincoln National Forest of southern New Mexico. The group had jokingly begun referring to themselves as “The Lincoln Larpers” since none of them had any real military training. But what they’d just gone through two days ago hadn’t been role-playing at all. It was all too real and had cost them dearly. In the wee hours two mornings ago, some two hundred men in light armored vehicles and trucks had rolled up state highway 24 from Pinon. Rob and his band did exactly what they’d been told to do by those Green Berets that had passed through the week before: “harass, disrupt, kill.” Just before 24 merged into 130 they’d unloaded from a steep ridge with everything they had! None of them had seen anything like it and Rob had wretched his guts out afterwards. When the shooting stopped, there were nearly a hundred enemy dead and a lot of shot up vehicles to the loss of seven Lincoln Larpers. The thought of those seven weighed heavy on Rob, his girlfriend among them. On paper that looked great…but his unit had barely forty to begin with which made those seven dead a huge loss. Now the enemy was coming with heavy armor and a lot more men. Rob still wasn’t clear on who they were. He’d spent his entire life in the Sacramento Mountains with little exposure to the outside world and the language he’d heard those men screaming was strange. Definitely not Spanish. Doesn’t make a damn bit of difference though, he thought to himself. Those guys had ravaged El Paso and now wanted to pass through the Sacramentos; HIS home. It didn’t matter to Rob or his group who they were, they wanted them dead. He gently pulled the reigns of his mare and turned her back towards camp. There was work to be done and plans to be made. The Lincoln Larper’s next trial by combat was only hours away.
Today’s Fiction Friday post is a continuation of this one…

For those who ordered the prototype 18CDO lasercut callsign patches and have yet to receive them...there's been a hiccup with the maker over in Germany and I'm waiting for him to catch up.
Thank you for your patience!
