Soviet pilot Alexey Maresyev (pictured in 1943). Shot down in 1942, he crawled for 18 days with shattered legs to reach Soviet lines. After both legs were amputated, he trained to fly again and returned to combat in 1943, earning the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

On March 31, 1966, the Soviet Union launched Luna 10, making history as the first spacecraft to enter orbit around the Moon. Luna 10 successfully transmitted scientific data back to Earth, studying the Moon’s composition and even broadcasting "The Internationale" for the 23rd Congress of the CPSU.
