Taking a moment to remind everyone that your first and most effective self-defense tool is your own common sense and situational awareness.
You do not have a duty to retreat from a potentially violent encounter, but if you have the option, and nobody is being abandoned to danger, then it is better to de-escalate and extract yourself from a confrontation - again - if it is possible to do so.
I am speaking to individual altercations, and specifically to any potential hostility in a crowd, protest, or other large gatherings. These situations can turn into mob violence and riots in a heartbeat.
I also want to remind people of what my primary self-defense tools are beyond situational awareness and common sense:
I carry a very bright tactical flashlight and pepper gel.
Those two tools will bring a non-lethal end to MOST altercations.
There is indeed a place for other methods and modes of self-protection. Just remember the real risk of engaging anyone in a crowd situation and the real risk to innocent bystanders in ANY confrontation involving firearms.
Observe, Evade, De-escalate, Escape. If you must stand and fight, do so with absolute commitment. Just remember to take advantage of any other available options first.
