I like living in a home I don’t own. I love knowing there’s a place I can go to, and a place I can leave. I know the neighbors, the cat that comes around every day at noon, the walls, the stairs. and I know I won’t be here for long. so I touch and leave no fingerprints. I like to believe everything stays the same without me; you will live. and I will get to know you all over again every time I see you. I will learn to fill the gaps with your words. I will learn to guess the puzzle without most of its pieces.
you don’t get to have all the moments. you don’t even get to have half of them. I will try to make a snowman with ten snowflakes—or two.
and you can’t do that with a place of your own. once you’re the one drawing a circle and calling it home, you can never truly leave it behind. It follows you everywhere. and there won’t be a second chance. you can’t return to somewhere you never left.
