The Times' Crime and Justice Commission - at a summit sponsored by surveillance company Axon - has today called for live facial recognition and digital ID to be introduced.
🤢 Tony Blair told the Commission that these Orwellian technologies are a "necessity"
This obsession with AI-powered surveillance reeks of authoritarianism & would be a hammer blow to our civil liberties (just have a read of the article's comments to see how this has gone down...)
The proposals include:
🔸 Mandatory digital ID (an authoritarian proposal that the British people have rejected time and again)
🔸 The expansion of live facial recognition (recently partially banned in the EU and used by authoritarian countries to suppress dissent)
We all want serious crime tackled and justice to prevail, but building a surveillance state where privacy is threatened like never before is not the answer.

🚨We’re WINNING: UK Court REJECTS Home Office bid to hear Apple’s challenge against Government orders to break encryption in secret
Together with Open Rights Group & Index On Censorship, we called on the court to open Apple’s closed appeal against the Home Office’s encryption-breaching order to the public.
The UK court today rejecting appeals for more secrecy from the Home Office is a win for free speech and privacy in the UK and internationally.

🚨The Government wants to develop a Minority Report-style murder prediction tool
The Ministry of Justice is developing a project that uses data from hundreds of thousands of people, including victims and witnesses of crime to build this tool - research by Statewatch reveals.
“We are alarmed by reports that the government is developing a programme enabling machines to predict who might become a murderer.
We know that algorithms can get it wrong, that AI can get it wrong, and that police themselves can get it wrong, even when crimes have already taken place – they must not be allowed to use pervasive technology to target innocent people who have not committed any crime.”
