Il Disinganno (The Release from Deception) 1754
Francesco Queirolo

The Latin passage reads:
"I will break thy chain, the chain of the darkness and long night of which thou art a slave so that thou might not be condemned with this world."
George and the Dragon.
Jacques Cathelineau

Anne—Louis Girodet de Roussy—Trioson

Jacques Cathelineau, revered as "the Saint of Anjou," was a pious peddler who became an unexpected leader in the Vendée uprising of 1793. Sparked by opposition to the French Revolution's policies, he rallied local peasants and achieved notable early victories, which led to his appointment as the generalissimo of the Catholic and Royal Army. His charismatic leadership and devout faith inspired the royalist forces. However, his command was brief, ending with his mortal wounding during the siege of Nantes, and he died in July 1793. Despite his short time as a military leader, Cathelineau is a central figure in the history of the Vendée War, symbolizing the passionate defense of traditional religious and royalist values against the revolutionary tide.

The beauty of the soul shines out when a man bears with composure one heavy mischance after another, not because he does not feel them, but because he is a man of high and heroic temper.

The paintings' twinned themes of war and peace expressed as historical allegories would have had an immediate emotional significance for Cropsey's audience. The recent Mexican War (1846-1848) and the subsequent debate over whether the western territories would join the nation as free or slave states contributed to the strained national atmosphere in the decade preceding the Civil War. First shown as his New York studio, this allegorical pair were shown seven times between 1852 and 1857. In this carefully constructed tour de force the earnest young artist created a powerful and lasting image of the fear and hopelessness brought about by war, eerily foreshadowing the bloody conflict that would envelop his country in the following decade.
