You think to yourself “how can people so boldly repeat easily verifiable lies.”
You remember that very few people care whether something is true or not. Most people only care what other people think is acceptable. They are weak, afraid of the crowd, unable to endure its scorn for the sake of truth or any other virtue.
These people would fall in line no matter who came to power. They would goose step for Hitler, they’d celebrate their children’s gay weddings under neoliberalism, they’d condemn the kulaks under Lenin. They exist only within whatever the acceptable political window is, no matter how extreme or narrow.
If you want them to change their opinion you can’t do it by telling them that something is true or false, you have to convince them that a lot of other people think something is true or false.
