Labour-led council removed a mural painted to commemorate WWI - and replaced it with a blank wall.
Crawley Borough Council (CBC) said the mural, in the West Sussex town's Tilgate Park, had fallen into "disrepair" and was done without permission.
But people have been left fuming and are calling for it to be reinstated.
CBC's claim that permission was not given also caused some confusion online after a Facebook post promoting the mural's completion was unearthed.
