Among all the systems we’ve set up at the Epic Homestead, the rain capture system is hands down my favorite.
While the design has changed over time, the idea stays the same: capturing, filtering, and directing rainwater into a holding tank, ready to be pumped wherever it’s needed for irrigation.
I’ll admit, it’s not always more affordable than city water, but the self-sufficiency it offers is invaluable. Plus, many cities offer rebate programs, so be sure to explore your options before getting started!

The Only Thing You Need to Become Self-Sufficient on a Quarter Acre.
With this information, you will probably never have to rely on anyone else in times of crisis. You will become truly independent of the government, grocery chains, pharmacies, water and power companies, and even the entire grid as you produce everything you need on your own land.
And the truth is, you don't need a large plot of land to do this, just a quarter of an acre or even less.

Depending on where you live, there’s lots of things you can plant in February!
Not sure how to figure out what climate zone you’re in? Google ‘USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map’, or check with your local nursery or garden center – they’re usually experts on the specific microclimates in your area.

Winter is the time to plant willow cuttings and whips. I love willow! It’s fast growing, creates a great screen, it’s attractive, and it can be used for so many crafty projects. It’s also incredibly easy to grow, because it roots so easily. Here’s how to take and/or plant willow cuttings:
🌱 The ideal time to take willow cuttings is after leaf fall and before leaf bud, so between December and March.
🌱 Cut your willow stems at the base, and then cut each stem into 20-30cm lengths, taking note of which way is up! (Tip: the buds on willow stems point upwards so if you get your cuttings muddled up just make sure you push them into the ground with the pointy ends of the buds facing up).
🌱 Push your cuttings into the ground to at least half their length.
🌱 Space your willow cuttings accordingly depending on purpose & variety. Our willow bed spacing is ~45cm in all directions, and we’ve planted them 4 deep to create a thick screen effect and windbreak.

Did you know this hack? 🌶️👇
You can save your pepper plants through the cold season by following these steps and replanting them in a grow bag or large container in a warm dark place through the winter.
This’ll give your pepper plants a head start for next season, so you’ll have mature, strong plants that are ready to produce even more peppers once it warms up again outside! 💪
Plus, it’s so satisfying to know you saved a plant through the chilly months.

Did you know that crows are incredibly smart birds? They are often considered among the most intelligent animals in the world.
They belong to the *corvid* family, which also includes ravens and magpies, and are known for their problem-solving skills, memory, and tool use.
Crows have been observed using tools to get food.
They can modify sticks or leaves to use as hooks or spears to access hard-to-reach objects.
In experiments, they have solved complex puzzles, like dropping stones into water to raise the water level and retrieve floating food (a task similar to Aesop’s fable of the crow and the pitcher).
Crows have excellent memories. They can recognize human faces and remember if someone was kind or threatening to them. They’ve even been known to pass this knowledge to other crows.
Crows can imitate human sounds and have a complex system of communication with different calls for specific situations, like danger or food.
While not naturally affectionate like dogs or cats, crows can develop bonds with humans, especially if they are regularly fed. In some cases, crows have been known to bring small “gifts” (like shiny objects or trinkets) to people who feed them.
They tend to be wary and cautious around unfamiliar humans, but in urban environments where they encounter people frequently, they can be more approachable. However, they can be aggressive when defending their nests or territory.
Overall, crows are highly intelligent and adaptable but tend to be more independent than friendly. They form complex social groups and show remarkable cognitive abilities for a bird.

We have 5 1/2 acres of land that we homestead. To some, this sounds like a ton of land; and to others, it doesn’t sound like very much. Either way, this land is incredibly generous, and there are hundreds of more pounds of food that we could produce…if only we had the time and energy.😉
Never underestimate what you can do with the plot of land that you’ve been given… whether that’s actual soil in your backyard or a pot on your windowsill.
