Beautiful updated rendering of the Flammarion engraving. The original woodcut was created by an unknown artist. It first appeared in Camille Flammarion's 1888 book L'atmosphère: météorologie populaire ("The Atmosphere: Popular Meteorology").
It's a striking image depicting a man, dressed in a long robe and carrying a shepherd’s crook, peering through the firmament at the edge of the world where the sky meets the Earth. There is a realm beyond, filled with swirling clouds, stars, cosmic wheels and other celestial wonders.

It shows a 360 degree time-lapse of the star field from Ecuador, at the Equator.
On the mid-right side of the image, where the stars are rising up, is the EAST.
On the mid-left of the image, where the stars are flowing down into the horizon, is the WEST.
The middle point between them is the NORTH. Polaris is not visible because it would be literally right on the horizon.
The edges of the photo frame are the SOUTH, where the image wraps around.
Amazing video that gives us a sense of the vast aether vortex that swirls over and around the stationary earth.

Happy Fool’s Day! Happy natural new year! And a happy first birthday to A Fool’s Wisdom! 🥳
It’s been beautiful here, I love to witness the return of the light, and the blossoming of the earth after the sodden gloom of winter. Grateful that nature can always be relied on to do it’s thing, right on time, every year without fail.
I spent a bit of time this winter looking into the calendar stuff. A lot of people saying there are 13 moons in a year, based on the fact that 13*28 = 364.
But when you track the lunar cycles on the calendar, there are actually 12 whole moon cycles, plus 10-11 days, in each solar year.
Though there are 28 days of lunar light, from crescent to crescent, there is also a day and a half when the moon is totally dark. So the total length of the lunar cycle is about 29.5 days.
29.5*12 = 354
11 days short of the solar year of 365 days.
The natural new year then, would be the start of the first month (marked by first crescent moon) after the spring equinox. This year it was on March 30-31st. Last year it was April 8-9th. It shifts by 10 days or so every year due to the phase difference between sun and moon cycles, but it’s always around about April 1st.
There’s more to it, of course, but that’s why I believe this is the marker of the true new year. It’s called Fool’s day because they fooled us into believing new year was in the middle of winter! 😅
