Керчь стала одним из первых городов, захваченных немецко-фашистскими войсками в начале войны. Город четырежды оказывался на линии фронта и дважды был оккупирован.
За 320 дней оккупации город был практически полностью разрушен.
Крупная десантная операция Керченско-Феодосийского десанта в 1942 году сорвала планы немцев наступления на Кавказ. В 1943 году к Керчи были стянуты большие силы, но Красная Армия успешно провела Керченско-Эльтигенскую операцию в ноябре 1943 года, что положило начало освобождению Крыма.
Керчь была освобождена 11 апреля 1944 года, а в 1973 году получила звание города-героя. За её защиту и освобождение 153 человека получили звание Героя Советского Союза.
