Ossetians are the modern descendants of the Alans, an ancient Iranic-speaking people who were part of the larger Scythian-Sarmatian groups that roamed the Eurasian steppes. Over time, they settled in the Caucasus, mixing with local peoples while preserving their unique language and culture.
Ossetians have a mix of North Caucasian, Iranic (Scythian-Alanic), and even some Slavic genetic influences, which contribute to their diverse physical traits. Genetic studies of the population of Dagestan show that approximately 40% of the male population have genetic markers linked to the migration of carriers of haplogroup R1b. This suggests genetic connections between the modern population of Dagestan and ancient Indo-European groups.
Additionally, many Dagestanis such as Avars and Dargins carry Yamnaya-related genes, which is not surprising, as the Yamnaya people emerged from a mix of Eastern Hunter-Gatherers (EHG) and Caucasus Hunter-Gatherers (CHG). As a result, many Dagestanis can resemble the Yamnaya population in terms of their appearance.
