Burnt Offerings (1976)
Unexpectedly effective lesser-known haunted house film. Horror is not a genre that typically ages that well - with exceptions, of course. However, this was very rapid and intense depiction of the power a place can have on those who inhabit it.
This is an excellent forgotten film that, in many ways, feels exceptionally recent for a horror film from this era. It utilizes the power of silence - using music and then, suddenly, cutting it during long drawn-out scenes of movement, constantly teasing you with the constant sense of anticipation.
The cast is strong - no unknown actors or teenagers, but a seasoned veteran cast of talented actors that allow for the interpersonal drama to shine. The chauffeur - a blurry memory transformed into a nightmarish presence.
I hope this film is rediscovered more and more, and eventually becomes a classic. Well recommended for those who enjoy 70s cinema.
