The Chad Pastoralist: History

22.04.202505:29
Oftentimes, some Pagans have the idea that European history suddenly stops circa 1000 AD, and that modern Paganism is about picking up exactly where we "left off"—leaving a huge gap between us now and our Pagan ancestors then, and neglecting the thousand-plus years of culture, history, and ancestors in between. The truth is that Paganism didn't "die" or "pause" the moment our ancestors converted. In addition, neither did our culture or history vanish across time—which, in and of itself, is invigorating, fascinating, and deeply valuable.
Even going back as recently as four hundred years ago, we find ourselves in the Early Modern Period. Zoning in on England, the culture itself was rich—the manners, customs, ideas, and beliefs. In fact, almost all churches in England during this period had a Maypole. Small things like this, so recent in our history, are often overlooked by some Pagans who completely disregard the culture and ancestors of this time (and other times) simply because it wasn't stereotypically "Pagan" or was not "Pagan enough."
Interestingly, it was Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans during the English Civil War who pushed to have church Maypoles removed. Before then, most English people would not have thought twice about Maypoles, and they were therefore connected to a living Pagan tradition. The Early Modern Period—its history, events, and people—could be studied almost exclusively, and various modern people of English descent could devote themselves to revitalising the cultural habits and small traditions of that time by bringing them into the modern world. This could be applied to almost any cultural period in history.
Moreover, English culture from the Early to the Late Middle Ages (which was, to a substantial degree, ultimately Anglo-Norman) gives us our modern English culture, habits, and attitudes. To ignore this in favor of a revisionist historical viewpoint—that history "stops" when Europe becomes Christian and "resumes" now with us "picking up the pieces"—is to do a disservice to our entire cultural heritage over the past thousand years.
If Europe had not become Christian, the architectural, artistic, and technological innovations that occurred between 1000 and 1600 AD would still have occurred within a religiously Pagan context (e.g., observe Lithuania’s culture in the Middle Ages). It is therefore valuable to learn about and continue to preserve archaic aspects of our ancestral cultures from the High to Late Middle Ages, in addition to earlier Pagan times, as well as the Early Modern Period—and, of course, the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

"How long are you going to wait before you demand the best for yourself and in no instance bypass the discriminations of reason? You have been given the principles that you ought to endorse, and you have endorsed them.
What kind of teacher, then, are you still waiting for in order to refer your self-improvement to him? You are no longer a boy, but a full-grown man. If you are careless and lazy now and keep putting things off and always deferring the day after which you will attend to yourself, you will not notice that you are making no progress, but you will live and die as someone quite ordinary.
From now on, then, resolve to live as a grown-up who is making progress, and make whatever you think best a law that you never set aside. And whenever you encounter anything that is difficult or pleasurable, or highly or lowly regarded, remember that the contest is now: you are at the Olympic Games, you cannot wait any longer, and that your progress is wrecked or preserved by a single day and a single event."

As winter sets in, some of us find ourselves dwelling on the bitter cold outside our cabin windows. Do the trees know that winter is here – and do they listen to this podcast? What are sacred trees? What can we learn from the muktigenerationality of trees as Pagans? In The Sacred Forest, Redbad’s Hall joins us to answer two of these three questions - on the Fire and Hammer Podcast.

On my herb wizard arc right now🌱🍀
Channel isn't dead, just been very busy studying, got some cool stuff planned to post here.
Tea tip of today: bramble leaf + stinging nettle + gorse flower. Nice fresh, slightly earthy tea. Good against throat ache too.

🌿 The Irminfolk is buying a Hof! 🌿
We're thrilled to share our ambitious journey that's been 16 years in the making!
Over the years, our dedication has led to steady growth, but our ambitions have outpaced our accommodations. Now, we're on the cusp of securing a permanent home—a hof surrounded by nature, offering both indoor and outdoor spaces for ritual, workshops, and gatherings in the hills of Northeast PA.
But we need your support to make Irminhof a reality. We have a lender, we have the property picked out, we have a business plan, but we need help covering a portion of the down payment. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to our goal. Whether it's a gilded statue dedicated in your honor or a limited edition T-shirt as a token of our gratitude, your generosity ensures your legacy within our sacred space.

I want to give a shout out to this new project by my good friend Rex. He made the Son of the North podcast discussing Indo-European religion, and with this new podcast he's taking a more laid back interview approach. He will be talking to heathens from all walks of life to discuss religion, lifestyle and their experiences as folkish pagans in the modern world. So please go ahead and show him some support!
PS: I'll be appearing on the second episode, it's going to be a good one.

Check out what these good lads are doing, a principle worth spreading!
I believe it's essential for Heathens to know, explore and have a real connection to the land they inhabit.

Let's talk about trees: Sacred Trees in (Ingvaeonic) Heathenry
Trees are integral parts of nature and well respected in Heathenry. However, certain trees were especially venerated by our ancestors. Traces of such customs are still found in the world around us.
We can infer, from various sources, nine sacred trees in (Ingvaeonic) Heathenry. These are:
Oak
Ash
Elm
Lime
Birch
Yew
Willow
Hazel
Rowan
Some are more obvious, such as the oak, ash, elm and yew. Some are perhaps a bit more surprising, such as the willow, lime and hazel.
In the upcoming few months, I will dedicate a short post to each tree, arguing from historical, mythical and ecological viewpoints.
Disclaimer: The topic of sacred trees is quite subjective depending on your locality and tribal background. I am arguing primarily from a Northwest European viewpoint, specifically relevant to Ingvaeonic regions. Not all tree species are universally present in the Germanic world, so these trees cannot be seen as universally sacred to all Germanic peoples since they were/are simply not present in all the homelands of the Germanic peoples. I believe there is, for most trees, enough evidence to treat them as universally sacred to Germanic Heathenry, but for some trees there simply isn't. Keep this in mind when considering my arguments.
Coming soon, I'll start with the most favourite, popular and well known tree: the almighty Oak.

HOF UPDATE.
Thanks to our generous donors we have raised enough "proof of funds" to submit our offer. The fundraiser is blowing away our expectations, averaging a $1k per day for 3 weeks solid.
This weekend we visited the property and began negotiations. When we are in contract we will share photos both publicly, and in our membership portal where we will discuss plans.
While we have raised enough to put in our offer, there will still be closing costs. Inspections, surveys, utilities, etc.
This Hof will become a focal point of the community and will enable all of us to improve and grow our faith in new ways we could never have dreamed of before. The Irminfolk are the Stewards and facilitators of this initiative, but it belongs to us all.
That is why we are asking for anybody who can help to please donate to our fundraiser, join our auxiliary, buy from futhark, or if you can't afford to do that right now, please share our appeal to whoever you know.

^regarding the horse discussion, I agree with Fimbul there. Calling others nithings and flinging shit over the internet is gay. Step in a ring or shut up. Or engage in serious, mutually respective discussion but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

What Is FAFP?
What Is FAFP?
From Across the Fire Pit (FAFP) is a joint creative venture between writer and poet Edward England, and the Order of the Sacred Mannerbunde.
The purpose of the project is to share poetry, specifically made by England and members of the OSM, in both written and spoken format.
It is the belief of England that something is missed when poetry is simply read off the page, and in order to truly experience the depth of the furor poeticus, poetry must be spoken and heard.

I have organized an art auction to benefit my dear friend J of Arcane Accents. Her husband unexpectedly and tragically passed away recently and our wonderful art community has come together and donated exquisite pieces to raise money for J and her young son.
The auction is now live. There will be five items in each round. Bidding lasts 2 days. There will be one off day in between rounds for me to finalize transactions. There are tons of exquisite donations so stick around for a spell! This is a unique and fantastic opportunity to snag handcrafted artisan goods made by our Folk for the holidays or for yourself - and for such a wonderful cause.
The gratitude in my heart for all the help and art donations I’ve received is tremendous. Thank y’all so much. This is what community is all about. :ᚷ:

That's insane.
I've actually found the discourse on this topic to be pretty shit tier for the most part, for every decent point about made bout the quality of inferences from the archeological evidence there are ten "Tom wants to fuck horses" type responses.
As mentioned in the previous post, this has no real bearing on modern praxis anyway, but it has since become an exchange of slander which is frankly shameful.
Both sides need to do better.

A shrewd opponent, ever battle-brave
Once trotting proudly neath Aurgelmir's mighty manes

A Dutch company is attempting to destroy European culture and heritage by carving out a quarry in Bremamger, Norway. The site contains rock art made by our Stone Age ancestors that is over 8000 years old.
BruteNorse put it best in saying that Vingen is one of the most unspoiled petroglyph sites in all of Europe, but it won't be for much longer if this quarry goes through.
Join me, along with others in signing this petition to help stop this desecration of ancient European culture and heritage from taking place. We won twice with Stonehenge, let's do it again here:
