“A nation’s calling is not only to survive but to bring the light of its spirit to the world, and this demands sacrifice from everyone who claims to be part of it. Sacrifice is not merely suffering or loss; it is a conscious giving of oneself to something that transcends personal boundaries—the nation’s mission, its culture, its truth. One who sacrifices their time, talents, or even life for this purpose becomes a pillar of the nation’s spirit, for only through such devotion does a nation gain the dimension of eternity.”

Lietuvių tauta ir jos ugdymas (Lithuanian nation and its education)
“Human being is hierarchical: some people stand higher, others lower, and this is not merely a matter of social or economic power, but an ontological condition arising from human nature itself. The modern world, striving to equalize everything and everyone, destroys this hierarchy, but in doing so, it also destroys the very essence of the human, because a human without distinction, without heights and depths, becomes merely an empty shell, possessing neither depth nor meaning. Aristocracy, as a state of the spirit, and not merely an expression of lineage or wealth, is what keeps a human human, what allows him to strive for transcendence through his relationship with the thing and the world

"Culture is man’s spirit’s vitality, which reveals-itself through creation, but civilization – this only its technical tool, which, losing spiritual foundation, turns into mechanical skeleton, not-having vitality. Spengler, speaking about West’s sunset, sees only this collapse, but not-sees, that spirit can revive even from ruins, if man preserves faith and will."

Rinktiniai raštai (Selected Writings)
“I always believed that faith is not just a personal matter for an individual, but the backbone of society. Without faith in God, without Christian values, society becomes merely a mechanism without a soul. When I spoke about social justice, the rights of the poor, or the duty to serve others, I relied on the Gospel. In politics, this was not popular, especially among those who saw only power games or economic interests. But for me, it was a principle: if we, as a nation, want to survive, we must rely not only on our own strength, but also on what lifts us above the everyday – God’s truth.”

About Social Work (1928)
"Lithuania’s greatness lies not in its present borders, diminished by centuries of partition and conquest, but in the memory of its past as a vast duchy stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Our geopolitical fate has been to stand as a bulwark—first against the Mongols, then the Teutons, and later the Muscovites. Yet this fate has also been our curse, for it placed us between hammers and anvils, our independence bartered by stronger powers. The task of our revival is not merely to reclaim land, but to awaken the consciousness of a people who have been lulled into submission. Our language, older than many in Europe, and our customs, preserved in the songs of the peasant, are our true sovereignty—a defiance of those who would redraw our maps to suit their ambitions."

"We, Lithuanians, are a nation that often bases its identity on what we are not, rather than what we are. Russia has become that ‘other’ whom we blame for everything, but this blame only masks our own emptiness. We hate not so much Russia as our own powerlessness, which it reminds us of."

“The true aim of philosophy is not to produce discursive accounts but rather to rekindle the ever-present inner spark of the divine within us and to raise the soul to the noetic cosmos either by the theurgic ‘ropes’ of worship (analogous to the rays of the sun), or by means of contemplation and dialectical ascent.”

“Lithuania stands at the crossroads of civilizations, its ancient spirit forged by cross and sword. Its soul, veiled in the night mist of whispering winds, cradles a flickering light—the heartbeat of a land that calls him back to what was lost, to what once was his.”

Tremtinio raštai (Exile Writings)
"The nation is strong only when all its members subordinate their interests to a common goal. The state is above individual classes, and only it can unite them. We see how chaos arises elsewhere in the world from discord between classes—in Lithuania, this cannot be. The state must be like a family, where each member works not for themselves but for the good of the whole, and the government is its guarantor."

"A civilization state is neither a frozen form, as Western rationalists believe, nor a purely material construct, as the Bolsheviks assert. The path of the Lithuanian nation is dialectical – between past and future, between spirit and body, between nation and world. Philosophically, it is a constant becoming, where the nation creates itself not as an isolated unit but as a living organism that opens to universal truths while preserving its roots. This synthesis of opposites is our strength against Western vanity or Eastern tyranny."

Dynamics of the Civilization State
FBI case files allegedly suggesting that Antanas Smetona was strongly pro-Nazi during his exile in USA.
"Liberalism speaks of freedom, but what freedom is this? It is the freedom of a ghost, a disembodied self that drifts through a world stripped of roots, of weight, of meaning. The liberal man is a stranger to himself, a merchant of his own soul, trading the bonds of kin and soil for the thin air of rights and contracts. This is not liberation but a deeper enslavement—to the market, to the illusion of choice, to the endless chatter of a culture that knows no silence. In its promise of universality, liberalism erases the particular, the unique, the irreplaceable, leaving behind a smooth, featureless plain where all identities dissolve into the same gray dust."

“Mussolini has spoken the great truth: Italian fascism is not for export. But be that as it may, we are talking about fascist currents all over the world. What does this mean? It means that in search of a better system for the state, one wants to use the experience of fascism. But the basis of fascism is nationality; therefore, in order to behave in a fascist manner, one must first of all be guided by the characteristics of one's own nation, to cultivate an idea that has appeared elsewhere in the conditions of one's own country. And it can only take root to the extent that there is suitable soil. The mistake of liberalism was that it thought that the English parliament was suitable for all nations, or all countries, without noticing that parliamentarism is a national characteristic of the Anglo-Saxons. Liberalism in Lithuania has been compromised by the Seimas. It has been living without a Seimas for several years. Will there be any representation of the nation in its place?”

Political Guidelines (1933)
"Modern civilization is empty, because it worships only itself and rejects God’s presence, which only gives meaning. Man, having-rejected transcendence, becomes only thing among things, and his freedom turns illusion, because he no-longer-knows, who he is and why he-lives. Western world, priding-itself its science, forgot, that truth is-not only that, which can be-measured."

"Lithuania must be a bridge between East and West, not their battlefield. Its future depends not only on the strength of our nation but also on our ability to maintain our independence when surrounded by raging great powers. Russia seeks to swallow us in the embrace of its empire, Germany wants to see us as an obedient servant, but we must choose a third path – the path of freedom, which relies on our history and culture. Only in this way can we remain a nation and not become merely a memory in the chronicles of other states."

Lithuania’s future between Russia and Germany.
"History is not just a pile of facts, but a reflection of the nation’s soul. Every event, every struggle is not only a part of the past but also a foundation for the future. We, Lithuanians, must understand our place in the world not as subordinates, but as those who shape our own destiny, and for that we need not only knowledge but also spiritual strength."

“I have walked the roads of Lithuania, from the sandy shores of the Baltic to the deep woods of Dzūkija, and in every step I found a story. The peasant with his plow, the fisherman with his net, the old woman spinning by the hearth—they are not mere figures in a landscape. They are the roots of our spirit, the keepers of our tongue, the silent poets who sing without words. To paint them is to preserve them, to write of them is to honor them, for they are the Lithuania that no conqueror can erase."
