Shame Culture: The Return of Standards

Shame is not oppression, but a compass telling you to correct your path & get back on track. In Traditional Heathenry, shame is a sacred mechanism. It protects what is holy, defends the group from decay, & calls the individual to rise above, though not with punishment, but with expectation. Modern society lives under guilt culture, which teaches that we hide our sins from others & to quietly feel bad, but our ancestors didn’t live that way. They lived in a shame culture, where right & wrong were public, visible, & communal. If you dishonored yourself or your folk, you felt it in the eyes of others & in that, you found the motivation to fix yourself, to earn back your honor, & not perpetuate that which is wrong. Shame isn’t wrong, but a hard love. It says: You can be more than this. You can be better - & we expect you to be. This is how a folk raise their standards & by extension, their honor in this life, & standing at the Helþing in the next.

Nordfresische Chronik, M. Anton Heimreichs, Chapter 8 (translated by Peter Kröger):

"The Frisians especially honored and worshiped primarily four idols, with the names Phoseta or Fosta, Freda, Meda and Woda. Of these, Meda and Phoseta had in his right hand some arrows, and in the left hand a sheaf of corn; but Freda and Woda had on their breast a shield, a helmet on the head, at arms and legs they were naked, and they had wings on their back; leading to the conclusion that the former have been worshiped in agriculture, but the others were worshipped during wars. And I have seen on the 12 June Anno 1650 depictions of Phostä and Wödä seen next to a large horn, whereby the people have been summoned for idolatry in S. Mary's Church at Utrecht itself. But among the idols Phoseta has been the most noble one, who has been the Vesta of the mother of Saturni who was named so as she decorated the earth with flowers herbs and fruits, and which has been the most honored in all Frisian countries, of which also Heiligland (‘Holy Land’) (which is also called Farrö or Farria Insula) formerly Fosetis, Fostis and Phosteland was called; and Heiligland, because there from time immemorial have been performed many pilgrimages to the forests and the pagan temples of Phostä or Vestae."

The halling dance originated in medieval Norway and began as a form of showcasing physical skills, such as strength and agility. Initially, it was a dance of competition and courtship, with fast movements, spins, and jumps. Over time, it became an important part of Norwegian folk culture, especially in the Hallingdal region, and continues to be performed at festivals and celebrations, symbolizing the country's cultural heritage 🇳🇴

Harbad- Odin OR Loki

Part 2

We know the event in Lokesana occurs late in the saga when Loki is held accountable for his crimes and bound by the Gods because Loki describes so many things that have already happened, such as the slaying of Balder (str. 28), the slaying of Thjazi-VIlund (str. 50-51), Thor’s adventures at Fjalar’s (str. 60) and his battle against Hrugnir (str. 61).

We also know the event of Harbardsljod happens just as late in the epic because strophe 24 of Harbardsljod refers to Loki’s role as Sifka and Blind among the Teutons, when he turned Gudhorm-JIrmunrek and Hadding-Thjodrek against one another but never reconciled them, then it is from this that we get our key to HarbardsljodIs placement. This episode is one of the last known during the primal age,, the age of mythological events, but takes place right before the events described in Lokasenna. Thus, if Loki is describing this event in Harbardsljod, then his meeting with Thor on the Radsey Sound must have taken place after Sifka-Blind-Loki’s treachery against Halfdan’s sons, Gudhorm and Hadding. Consequently, this would place Harbardsljod in exactly the same time frame as Lokasenna.

As we see, Harbard is not Odin disparaging his wife, Frigga the queen of Asgard, but rather Loki disguised as Odin hurling insults against the gods as he is known to do.

The Gallehus Horns

The Gallehus Horns were found in 1639 and 1734 in Denmark. Both horns consisted of two layers of gold sheet, the inner sheet of lesser quality, and the outer sheet of pure gold. The outer sheet was constructed from a number of seerings, each covered with 2nd cast figures soldered onto the rings, with yet more figures chased into the rings between the larger figures. The second horn is inscribed in protonorse using the Elder Futhark.

Historian and scientist Willy Hartner published a possible interpretation of the Cipher runes. He noted two dates that correspond to a lunar and solar eclipse that occurred in 412 and 413 c.e. These dates correspond to the germanic migration era, also known as the Völkerwanderung.

Hartner translated the second horn, which is also believed to be encoded with Cipher runes. He translated one part as:

""May I, the potion of this horn, bring help to the clan".

Another inscription reads:

"I Hlewagastiz (famous guest) Holtijaz (son of Holt) made the horn."

This year, c. 2025, marks the 333rd year of the Salem witch trials of 1692. According to University of Missouri at Kansas City timeline of the events, quote, "March 1, 1692: Magistrates John Hathorne and Jonathan Corwin examine Tituba, Sarah Good, and Sarah Osborne for "witches teats." Tituba confesses to practicing witchcraft and confirms Good and Osborne are her co-conspirators."

It was a ritual of humiliation, showing their breasts to the accusers and if deemed "too good," it'd be "evidence™" of "witchcraft" apparently.

Notable for being a holdover from medieval judeo-christian mass-hysteria, the witch trials were more than just larping like o.t. jews, it was about eradicating spiritual power, herbalism and premonition that are naturally possessed within our womenfolk.

"They even believe that the sex (women) has a certain sanctity (holiness) and prescience (prophetic/deep spiritual intuition), and they do not despise their counsels, or make light of their answers."

Daily dose of truth & wholesomeness

One of our most ancient values is being pro-family:

"It's better to have children than to not, no matter how late you may choose to have them. Rare is the grave or memorial stone raised for the man with no sons.”
- Odin - Havamal - 72

"To limit the number of their children or to destroy any of their subsequent offspring is accounted infamous, and good habits are here more effectual than good laws elsewhere."
- Tacitus - Germania - Chapter 19

To follow ancestral faith is to be pro-family, for how could you have ancestors or even exist without them forming families? You too will one day be an ancestor, make your descendants proud!

Cosmological Importance Of Alveig

In the great war between clans of Jotun and those of the gods, wherein the first fimbul winter resulted, the family of Ilvadi were instigated by Loki to cease providing service for the Asa and align themselves with the Jotun. The great winter was the result of this terrible feud.

Halfdan, the husband of Alveig, allied with the Asa tribe, forges through great battles and eventually manages to rob Ivalde of his daughters Groa and Alveig. Halfdan marries Alveig and is successful at restoring the natural cycle of nature and it's "growth" (Groa) and "Life giving sap" (Alveig) thus ending the fimbul winter which plagued both the gods and man.

Using Finno-Ugric linguistics and traditions to interpret and understand teutonic lore and customs is not a valid means of grasping the tuetonic tradition. It is a universalist and syncretistic approach that should be shunned by serious heathens.

Once again we see the system unfold, and the system is the religion. We proposed the idea that the purpose of blót is to offer gifts to the Gods in return for their blessings or “Helps.” This is called both Hjalpr and Bjargr in the old tongue, both meaning “Help.”

When so many random things are telling you the same thing, then they aren’t random at all. They are part of a larger system, and we are now further in our understanding of the system.

The Gallehus Horns are long thought to have been sacrificial horns, and if what is said here is true, it delves once again into the notion of praying for Hjalpr to defeat Nauð. There simply is no other explanation. This IS the ancestral purpose, and is part of the grander system or religion.

The gods and goddesses mentioned as principle deities of the Frisians are easily identified with the exception of one, Meda.

Phoseta = Forseti
Freda = Freyr possibly Freya
Woda = Odin

But who is this god or goddess known as Meda?

It is likely that Meda is a derivative of "mjöd" (mead), and is a polyonomous name for a nourishing goddess who gives drinks of growth and regeneration to nature and the gods, an epithet of a goddess whose characterization is of a force active in the service of nature and of the god(s) of harvests.

It is possible Meda is none other than Alveig the sister of Groa, whose name indicates she is a goddess of vegetation and signifies her as this "nourishing drink". According to Saxo, Alveig, is the daughter of Sumble and we can further deduce from Forspjallsljod, that she is also the daughter of the great artisan Ivalde, who also shares the epithet "Ölmódr" (mead).

Harbad- Odin OR Loki

Part 1

Harbad- This name, while a name certainly attributed as one of the names of Odin, simply means "Old man" and there are many reasons and facts that point out that Harbardsljod records an event not about Odin, but rather an event of Loki in disguise as Odin, hurling insults with the purpose of delaying Thor from joining the gods during his (Loki's) trial as recorded in Lokesana.

The very first strophe of Harbardsljod is a indicator that Harbard’s designation is false. The name is a kenning for an old man, yet Thor sees him in this encounter as a "knave of knavesI, a youth of youths (sveinn sveina)" and later calls him a totI, a trifling boy. So it is definite that the name Harbard Hoar-Beard, though perfectly describing Odin, here falsely represents the person who claims it. Never would Thor, throw such insults at his father, but rather sees the masquerade that Loki is coordinating.

None of the incidences mentioned in Harbardsljod can in any way be linked to any of Odins known adventures. Viktor Rydberg has demonstrated that all of the events either relate Loki’s adventures as known in other sources or allude to his specific nature.

Strophe 8 of Harbardsljod details a sexual metaphor. Hildof (Maid-wolf) signifies the phallus while Radsey sound (the sound of rad, a sexual union) is an alliteration for a vagina. Harbard is saying that his penis (Hildolf), whose home is a vagina (Radsey sound) told him to make the boat (a sleight). This may has connection to Thor’s journey to Geirrod where giantesses, urinating in the river Vimur (the Elivagar) caused it to swell. This event refers to the other, i.e. that the body of water that obstructs Thor’s path in Harbardsljod is the same as that which caused him trouble before.

Strophe 16 of Harbardsljod references FjIlvar as one of the frost-giants who led the attack on Midgard during the first Fimbulwinter. This demonstrates that Harbard is an ally of the frost giants and an enemy of the gods. All-green is an epithet of Midgard. When Loki-Harbard then claims, in str. 18, to have had sex with seven sisters who seek to wind ropes of sand during this war this refers to Hymir’s daughters, mentioned in Lokasenna strophe 34, who, just as Gjalp, Greip, Stikla and Rusila are personifications of the wild, overflowing rivers that surge through dales, digging riverbeds in their depths and leaving long, continuous sandbanks, ropes of sandI, along their paths to the seaI.

In strophe 20 of Harbardsljod we are told that Harbard is the lover of "myrd-riders" (evil witches), this references Lokis union with Gullveig Heid.

Strophe 24 of Harbardsljod refers to Loki as Lokerus, who is Sifka-Bekki and Blind BIlvise in Saxo’s Historia Danica and Beowulf. Lokerus in Saxo' work is the one who turned Gudhorm and Hadding against one another, a conflict which leads to many deaths, and never brought about reconciliation. This is the same position loki held in opposition to the Gods.

Strophes 30-32 of Harbardsljod refers to Loki’s exploits with Idun, when he was sent off to find her. It was then that he held the linen-white maid after turning her into a nut and flying off in falcon form. He needs Thor’s help because Thjazi-VIlund was chasing him in eagle-guise towards Asgard. This help Thor gave for the security of Idun and the Asagard and the gods.

Strophes 40-42 of Harbardsljod details Loki’s part in Thor’s campaign against Geirrod where he had led Thor astray with his lies, telling him that green paths lead towards Geirrod’s home (Thorsdrapa 1). Thor’s statement about Harbard offering the war party hard terms refers to this.

These explanations breaking down the fine details of Harbardsljod clearly show us that this event is not Odin himself speaking to Thor, but rather Loki disguised as Odin hurling insults against the gods. Loki's purpose was to delay Thor from showing up to the feast at Aegirs hall. Lokesana details how Thor did in fact show up late when the gods pronounce judgement upon Loki.

My son recently became of age and knowledge of our traditions. He was gifted a Thor Idol during yule, and we will be performing Thorra blot soon and augmenting his idol with the sacred smearing ritual. My son will be performing his first rite leading this ritual.

Generational transfer of knowledge of these rites is one of the most important things we can do. As a father, teaching and watching my own son enter manhood, and learning our sacred ways is a very proud moment for me. His first ritual is empowering and augmenting his idol. This is the perfect first ritual for our sons and daughters to learn as a rite of passage.
