The V-1 flying bomb was an early pulse-jet-powered weapon and a precursor to modern cruise missiles. Developed by the German Luftwaffe at Peenemünde Airfield during World War II, the V-1 was initially codenamed "Cherry Stone" during its early development. It was the first of the Vergeltungswaffen.
The V-1s were launched from specially designed "ski" sites along the French (Pas-de-Calais) and Dutch coasts. The first attack on London occurred on June 13, 1944, one week after the D-Day landings in Normandy. At the height of the campaign, over 100 V-1s were fired daily at southeast England, with a total of 9,521 launched. The attacks gradually decreased as Allied forces captured launch sites, with the final V-1 capable of reaching Britain being fired in October 1944.
The first V-1 to strike London landed near the railway bridge on Grove Road, Mile End, on June 13, 1944, Today, an English Heritage blue plaque marks the site of the impact.
