In 1964, a new talent was discovered at an art exhibition in Gothenburg - a natural genius with unprecedented expression. His name was Pierre Brassau, and his avant-garde works with "powerful brushstrokes, painted with the delicacy of a ballet dancer" (according to a renowned critic) thrilled the art world. One collector even bought one of his paintings for 90 dollars. A promising start to a great career as an artist - if it weren't for one small detail: Pierre Brassau was a chimpanzee.

The journalist Åke Axelsson wanted to put the pompous art experts to the test. With the help of his friend, the artist Inge Funcke, he went to the Borås Zoo and asked the director to give the monkey named Peter a canvas and paints. The chimpanzee painted four works - and these were exhibited at the Christinae Gallery in Gothenburg.

After the scandal, nobody spoke of Brassau any more, although critics described his paintings as the best in the exhibition. In 1969, Peter the monkey moved to Chester Zoo in England.
