Despite it being pagan coded, I like the concept of the life stages of womanhood as Maiden, Matron, and Crone. Each stage is initiated by an irreversible biological event that involves suffering: menarche, childbirth, and menopause. The vast majority of women will go through all three events, and each stage marks a major transformation in the woman's role in greater society. For women, this reality is fixed and unchanged through the ages.
In contrast, men's life transitions have primarily been marked by custom. Rite of passage rituals used to denote a boy's transformation into manhood at some point during puberty. Marriage was the primary event that marked an established man. And old age was marked by transitions into higher positions of influence or retirement from military service or their paid occupation. As times change, coming-of-age rituals have largely disappeared, marriage and fertility rates have fallen, and economic turmoil has many wondering if they can ever retire. Thus we see men feeling lost in their self conception of masculinity, even to the point of neurotically or destructively trying to find ways to establish a concept of "manhood" in themselves and in the eyes of their peers.
I don't have any particular solutions in mind, but it is worth thinking about for those of us who have husbands, brothers, and sons who feel or will feel lost in the current age.

It's not easy to give what or who you love back to God. What we give to God will be remembered for eternity. He is there when no one else is.
He reminds us of our folly, our sin, our short comings, and our wretched nature. In that reminder He stretches His arms forth and with love He helps us to know what really matters: Him. And oh does how much God love...How great is His mercy...
