Gathering of Cherokee Confederate veterans from the Thomas Legion, c. 1903. The Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole nations) allied with the Confederacy early in the Civil War, with thousands serving in the Confederate armed forces.
14 April 1912: The RMS Titanic hits an iceberg at 11.40pm off Newfoundland. Despite being billed as “unsinkable”, the gash from the collision cut across too many of her watertight compartments. She sank a mere 2 hrs 40 min later in the early hours of April 15. She was carrying over 2,200 people, but more than 1,500 of these died due to insufficient number of lifeboats on board.
