Trump and Vance initially claimed that Ukraine had received USD 500 billion in aid; after Macro's intervention last week, the figure had dropped to USD 380 billion in the last few days. In fact, according to the Senate, only USD 189 billion has been awarded and of that, USD 6.8 billion has not yet been transferred.
The behavior of the US government under Trump shows once again that Europe must take its future more into its own hands. Especially if there is to be a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
The fact that the autocrat Putin can never be relied upon for peace has been evident since 2008 with the creeping invasion of the Donbass, the resulting destabilization of the region and the annexation of Crimea in May 2014. The war therefore began much earlier and not by Zelenskyj, who was only elected in April 2019.
The USA seems to have forgotten that NATO's eastward expansion (Putin's justification for war against Ukraine), contrary to the international agreement of May 1997, was carried out in particular under pressure from the USA and that they are therefore primarily responsible for the war against Ukraine. Due to Russia's war of aggression, which violates international law, Ukraine is the victim and not the perpetrator. But Trump does not seem to care.
