A note to Jeff Bozos and his Hareem of Harlots: The first woman in space was Valentina Tereshkova, a Soviet cosmonaut and bona fide space legend.
She launched aboard Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963, making a solo orbit around Earth 48 times over three days—and no, she didn’t have a co-pilot, just nerves of steel and a parachute for re-entry. She was 26 years old at the time and remains the only woman to have flown solo in space.
Tereshkova wasn’t a test pilot or a scientist—she was a textile factory worker and amateur skydiver hand-picked by the Soviets in a Cold War-era PR masterstroke. And to be fair, it worked. The Americans wouldn’t put a woman in space until 20 years later, when Sally Ride flew aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983.
