May 6 – Infantry Day
The Ukrainian infantryman has been renowned throughout Europe since the Cossack era. On May 6, 1648, Ukrainian Cossack infantry under the command of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, reinforced by Tatar cavalry, achieved their first victory over the Polish army at the Battle of Zhovti Vody. The Cossacks were considered among the finest infantry in Europe, pioneering and perfecting advanced combat techniques, modern equipment, and firearms. They consistently sought to take part in military campaigns across Europe to gain real combat experience and apply it in the defense of their own land.
Such is the infantryman of "Azov" — brave, motivated, and skilled in the use of modern technologies and advanced warfare techniques. The Azov fighters honor the traditions of Ukrainian Cossacks and rightly consider themselves the heirs of this legacy. The 12th Azov Special Purpose Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine is named after Dmytro Vyshnevetsky — a noble Cossack leader of the 16th century — for a reason.
Near today’s Azovstal, at the mouth of the Kalmius River, stood the center of the Kalmius Palanka of the Zaporozhian Host. It was here that the Cossacks defended Ukrainian land from enemy invasions, and it was here that Azov fighters stood in defense of Ukraine from May 2014 until May 2022. We will undoubtedly return to Mariupol, and the Azov infantryman will once again raise the Ukrainian flag on the ancient Cossack land.

11 Years of “Azov”: The Story of a Legend
May 5, 2014. After arrests, imprisonment, the famous battle on Rymarska Street, the liberation of Kharkiv, and the first shots of war, a group of Ukrainian partisans officially became a combat unit.
Unique footage from those historic days is shown in today’s video.
The "Black Men," under the command of Andriy Biletsky, received insider information: disoriented by the country’s chaos, Ukrainian Interior Troops had abandoned their base in Berdiansk. For the "Black Corps," this was a chance to seize weapons from the military base, already being looted by orcs and separatists. The only legal way to get them? Transform from a partisan group into a police unit. For nationalists, ultras, and hooligans who had been fighting the police just days before, this twist was ironic and unexpected. But within days of becoming an official unit under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, they fought several battles and even captured the so-called “DNR” defense minister. Thus, the legendary “Azov” was born.
Just a month later, the newly formed volunteer unit liberated Mariupol — a daring operation that Biletsky convinced skeptical commanders to approve. Their equipment included an armored KAMAZ truck, an anti-aircraft gun, and a heavy machine gun. Among the fighters were 16–18-year-old volunteers. What followed were battles for Maryinka, Ilovaisk, Shyrokynе in September 2014, the Pavlopil-Shyrokyne operation in February 2015, and many more — all marked by boldness and defiance.
The front temporarily quieted. “Azov” used this time to professionalize. They established the Konovalets Military School, sergeant courses, and a comprehensive recruitment and training system. What began as a group of nationalists became one of Ukraine’s most professional and combat-ready units — growing from a battalion to a regiment, then a brigade. But “Azov” has never been just a military unit. It’s a phenomenon, a great family.
During the 2022 invasion, the unit led the defense of от, forming the legendary garrison at “Azovstal.” Its veterans defended Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Dnipro regions, and launched operations to rescue comrades trapped in the Azov Sea region. They died and were captured for their brothers-in-arms.
We remember all those who fell on this path. And in their name, we keep fighting for our country. Congratulations to everyone who was — and remains — a part of the Azov family!

CENTURIA CONGRATULATES COLONEL ANDRIY BILETSKY ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE FORMATION OF THE AZOV BATTALION
The Centuria organization extends its congratulations to Colonel Andriy Biletsky on the anniversary of the formation of the Azov Battalion — a key stage in the development of Ukraine’s Nationalist movement. It was within Azov that many volunteers took part in their first battles and began their journey, which later gave rise to numerous successful civic, athletic, cultural, and military initiatives.
One of these initiatives is the Centuria Organization itself, created by Azov veterans.
We will always remember how our Leader, having just been released from prison at the end of February 2014, managed to form a volunteer battalion within two months. That battalion then grew into a regiment which produced valuable cadres for the creation of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade and the 3rd Army Corps. Loyal men have always followed our Leader, and they continue to march alongside him today — moving forward together toward the building of a Great Ukraine.
Semper fidelis!
Lieutenant Colonel Ihor Mykhailenko “Cherkas”,
2nd Commander of the Azov Regiment,
Founder of the Centuria Organization,
Deputy Commander of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade.
