☎️ Scam Calls & Fraud Prevention in Russia (2025): Must-Know Info for Expats
Scam calls are a growing problem worldwide, and Russia is no exception. Scammers use many tricks, including robot calls that record your voice to steal your identity.
Here’s your quick guide to stay safe:
📋 What to Watch For:
📞 Common Scam Types:
Fake bank calls asking for card details or PIN☎️
Impersonation of officials demanding fines or payments💸
Lottery or prize scams asking for upfront fees🤑
Robot calls that ask you to repeat a phrase or say “Yes” — these recordings can be used to authorize transactions or create fake accounts in your name🤖
🚫 Don’t Share Personal Info
Never give out passwords, PINs, or bank details over the phone
Hang up immediately if a robot call asks you to say anything
Legitimate organizations never ask you to confirm info by repeating phrases or saying “Yes” over the phone
📞 Report Suspicious Calls
Contact your bank if you suspect fraud
Report scam numbers to your mobile operator or police
Use call-blocking apps to avoid spam and scam calls
💡 Tips for Expats & Visitors:
Save official numbers for banks and services📀
Don’t answer unknown numbers or calls from robot voices🗣
Educate friends and family about these scams👹👹
Use two-factor authentication on your accounts for extra security🔒
❌ Don’t Forget:
Scammers can sound very convincing—stay calm and cautious
Keep your phone and security apps updated
Regularly review bank statements for unauthorized activity

This is outdated information.
* All foreigners who obtain residency must obtain a Russian driver’s license within 1 year.
* Licenses can no longer be converted from any. foreign country, as of July 1.
* You will be required to have a certificate from a driving school as well as the medical certificate.
* The medical certificate is only good for… 30 or 60 days. I don’t recall.
I just went through this.
And - the online study materials won’t help much. But during the driving course you will take practice exams 20 times over - until you can pass it.
Pro Tip: The actual written exam is computerized, and you will be recorded taking it. The test is very nuanced. If you don’t know Russian well, you’ll miss the nuances.
Pro Tip 2: You will get 20 questions. If you pass them all, you will get an additional 5. You are only allowed 1 incorrect answer out of 25.
