“It’s not good for Europe to be the permanent security vassal of the United States.” So says JD Vance during a phone conversation with UnHerd on Monday, his first major interview with a European outlet since taking office as Vice President. The backdrop is a week of turmoil on financial markets triggered by President Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs.
The decision to apply (and then partially rescind) hefty tariffs on European allies — combined with a barrage of harsh statements about Europe from Vance, both public ones and leaked private messages — has left many on the Continent wondering whether America can still be thought of as a friend.
Vance’s answer: yes, provided European leaders are prepared to assume a more independent role on the international stage, and to be more responsive to their own voters, especially when it comes to the question of immigration.
“I love Europe,” Vance tells me in a wide-ranging interview from his office in the West Wing, showcasing a diplomatic side that has not always been front and centre. “I love European people. I’ve said repeatedly that I think that you can’t separate American culture from European culture. We’re very much a product of philosophies, theologies, and of course the migration patterns that came out of Europe that launched the United States of America.”

European nationalists who peer across the Atlantic may see a racial label where a cultural signal flares. In America, this signal reaches through the noise, calling for cohesion in the absence of nationhood. The immigrant once became American through absorption into a defined mythos. That mythos no longer exists. “White” now fills the vacuum with a new mode of belonging — fused from ancestral fragments, reconstructed into a postmodern tribe bound by shared affinities rather than state-sponsored creeds. This tribe seeks kinship, not conquest.

Oswald Mosley
by Robert Skidelsky
Mosley emerges from this intensely readable book as a man with an extraordinary range of interests. His political and intellectual activity has impinged on almost every formative issue of the modern world - socialism, fascism, imperialism, antisemitism and, in the post-war period, Europeanism. More than a study of a man, a penetrating analysis of the malaise of the between the wars period.

One of the more famous Der Stürmer cartoons from an Easter period (March 1929) was entitled "Resurrection" and depicted columns of men marching past and saluting Jesus on the cross. The main article alongside this dealt with "the blood libel," while the poem inside entitled "Easter Battle-Cry" argued that Christians had to be
"antisemites" because Jesus had driven the moneychangers from the Temple (Matthew 21:12), described as a "Jewish brood" by the poet, and that Germans would achieve resurrection if they turned to a new saviour: "From Hitler alone comes your salvation!"

We gave the MSI ten years of activity after returning from the Italian Social Republic, from the “allied” concentration camps, from the prisons of anti-fascism […]. Today we can no longer endorse with our presence an orientation that is foreign to the original purposes […]. We saw in the MSI the ideal continuity of the battle that began, just as adolescents, under the banner of the Republic of Honor, when we did not arrive in time to enjoy triumphs and enthusiasm […], but we only reached the last act, taking on all the liabilities of military defeat, with a gesture of faith. […]. It seemed logical to ask that the MSI really be an order of fighters and believers and that it become a revolutionary battle against the democratic-parliamentary system […]. But now the MSI is on other paths.

Fascism, as a political system, is no more responsible for the policy of exterminating the Jews than nuclear physics, as a theoretical science, is responsible for the destruction of Hiroshima. We should not therefore have it on our conscience.

Many CasaPound Facebook supporters felt, in particular, that CasaPound was the only movement currently generating new and creative political approaches:
Because it’s the last evidence of a social right-wing.
Because in such a depressing Italian panorama, they are the only ones who, from time to time, manage to face problems with a creative approach.
CasaPound is the only revolutionary answer to the political dullness of these days. It’s life in a land of dead people!
Because of their originality of ideas, their integrity and spontaneity, their true social commitment because of their concrete helpfulness towards those in need. Therefore: they don’t just do ‘media walks’ but act truly. They make facts and not only words. The present Italian political system is obsolete.
Because it’s the only movement that is really outside the schemes and that works in a concrete and disinterested way for a better world.
I think it’s the only one that is really close to my ideologies. I’m a Mussolinian.

Nazi Economic Thought and Rhetoric During the Weimar Republic: Capitalism and its Discontents
by Claus-Christian W. Szejnmann
At the heart of National Socialism was a radical economic vision and rhetoric that provided the NSDAP with an authenticity and legitimacy in their struggle to succeed the free-market capitalist economic system – this was crucial to their successful mass mobilisation and to becoming an acceptable party of government. At a time when capitalism's future and Germany's place in it looked bleak, many regarded the German Socialist economic vision entailing state control and autarky in favour of nationalist policies as the most promising economic programme. Meanwhile National Socialist rhetoric had become an integral part of a powerful anti-capitalist Zeitgeist, an anti-system rallying cry that questioned the core principles of capitalism. Its proponents condemned its selfishness, materialism and unfairness, and instead demanded that the common good had to be protected from individual greed.

When Der Stürmer covered Easter, the paper often included images that depicted Jesus's crucifixion but offered radically different interpretations of what this meant. Most often, it drew a comparison between a supposedly "Aryan" Jesus and an "Aryan" Germany, having a naked female figure take the place of Christ in 1927 in a cartoon entitled "Ecce Germania."
In comparable manner, its cover in April 1928 had Germania replace the figure of Jesus, standing with Barabbas in front of what was called a "Jewish rabble" crying, "Crucify!" The accompanying text argued Jesus had been a kind of "folk-hero" who called "farmers and fisherman" to "fight" against the Jews, and had been crucified as a result.

PARMA – In the traditionally left-wing northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna, the recent triumph of a neo-fascist student movement in school elections is the latest sign of radical responses to social problems and further evidence that traditional political parties are losing their grip on the democratic process.
More than 600 students at Galilei high school, in the town of San Secondo Parmense, elected members of the radical right group Blocco Studentesco (Students’ Block) as their four student body representatives. The students’ movement is connected with Casa Pound.
This is the first time that a social right-wing group has had such a clear victory in the once Communist region of Emilia Romagna.
Further south, students groups close to Casa Pound and the Students’ Block have also won some recent school elections in Rome.

In 1963, Clemente Graziani, one of the leaders of Ordine Nuovo (who later lived in, and escaped to, Britain, France, and South America, among other places), published a pamphlet on the revolutionary and subversive war (La guerra rivoluzionaria, Quaderni di Ordine Nuovo, 1, April 1963). Graziani basically argued that this was needed to stop international communism’s imperialist projects in many areas of the globe. To this end, he claimed, all moral and humanitarian principles had to be suspended. To react to Russian expansionist plans, he argued, all forms of actions were allowed. The OAS, to Graziani, represented one of the most successful and noteworthy examples of this guerrilla-type warfare, and Graziani apparently became an Italian member of the French organization.

In April 2016, Aysegul Gurbuz, a Labour Councillor from Luton, was suspended over allegations that she posted a series of antisemitic tweets, including one describing Adolf Hitler as ‘the greatest man in history’ and saying if it was not for Hitler ‘these Jews would’ve wiped Palestine years ago’. She resigned from the party.

The April 1940 ‘Race Exhibit’ in Rome, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, announced:
“The rise of Fascism has opened a new era of greatness for the Italian people, a greatness which finds its truest expression not only in the physical renewal of the race, but above all in the spiritual strengthening of the race. Under the guidance of the Duce, the race is returning to its role as the center from which a new civilization and a new social organization shine forth.”
