🇬🇧 The LZ 1, the first Zeppelin
On July 2, 1900, a zeppelin flew for the first time. It was the first experimental rigid airship that could stay in the air after it was launched from a floating hangar on Lake Constance, southern Germany.
Count Luftschiff Zeppelin had devoted all his energies to the design of this type of air vehicle since his retirement from the army in 1890. Years later, he created the company in charge of its design thanks to his money and that of several German industrial entrepreneurs hopeful with the potential of the aircraft.
The airship, named LZ 1 after the initials of its inventor, began construction on June 17, 1898 from a cylindrical frame with transverse frames reinforced with wire and longitudinal members covered with plain cotton fabric.
He added a rudder at each end and two internal combustion engines for propulsion. It took the whole month of June to inflate the airship with hydrogen and when it was ready it was taken out of the shed on the afternoon of July 2, 1900 and lifted from an immense raft built in the middle of the lake.
On its first flight, the 420 ft (128 m) long LZ 1 carried five people on board, reached an altitude of 1,345 ft (410 m) and flew a distance of 3,7 miles (6 km) in 17 minutes, until the wind forced its emergency landing although without major shocks.
The large audience gathered around the lake was absorbed by the gigantic mole that was rising in the sky, while Count Zeppelin could not hold back the tears from his eyes at the emotion of the achievement achieved.
Although the first trip was successful, the experiment revealed several serious structural deficiencies in the aircraft that were later fixed.

Der Staffelter Hof in Kröv an der Mosel ist das älteste Weingut der Welt, das noch in Betrieb ist. Es leitet seinen Namen von der Reichsabtei Stablo-Malmedy im heute belgischen Stavelot ab, zu der es über Jahrhunderte gehörte und der gegenüber es abgabepflichtig war.
Es wurde 862 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt und zählt damit weltweit zu den ältesten noch bestehenden Unternehmen.
Während der Zugehörigkeit zu Frankreich wurden die Abteien 1803 enteignet und aufgelöst. Peter Schneiders erwarb am 1. Februar 1805 das Weingut vom französischen Staat. In der Folgezeit befand sich das Gut in der Hand von 7 Generationen. Der aktuelle Winzer ist Jan Matthias Klein, der den Betrieb im Jahr 2005 übernommen hat.
