On this day in 1746, the Highland clans were defeated for the first time by the combined forces--infantry, cavalry, and artillery--of the English army at the Battle of Culloden. The defeat was the death knell of ancient clan-based society in the Scottish Highlands. Thereafter, many Scots began their migration to Appalachia and the American South, including some of my own ancestors. And the rest, as it is said, is history.--Michael Hill

On this day, Palm Sunday, in the year 711 A.D., the jews opened the gates of Toledo, Spain, to the invading forces of Islam. The Moors burned the Basilica, killing hundreds of Visigoth Christians worshipping inside. Upon capture of the city, the capital of Visigoth Spain, the Muslim leadership turned administration of the city over to the jews. A reward for their treachery against their Christian hosts. Lesson from history: Don't trust jews.
