Where was the last church of the Nicholas II family located?

In the Winter of 1908, Nicholas II paced the clearing on the outskirts of the park in Tsarskoye Selo. He did this with all seriousness: The monarch was determining the size of the future church. Less than a year later, in the presence of his family, he laid the first stone in the foundation of the Feodorovsky Cathedral.

The last Romanovs lived permanently in the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoye Selo from 1905. But, surprisingly, there was no house church there. Chance helped: the regiments of the emperor's personal guard – His Imperial Majesty's Own Convoy and the Life Guards Combined Infantry Regiment of His Imperial Majesty, which were stationed next to the Alexander Palace, also needed their own church.

The first architect of the cathedral was Alexander Pomerantsev, author of the legendary GUM department store on the Red Square. But, his project turned out to be too large-scale, so the tsar settled for a more modest version by Vladimir Pokrovsky.

Soon, a cathedral built in the spirit of Old Russian architecture appeared in Tsarskoye Selo. Externally, it resembled the Annunciation Cathedral of the Kremlin, and the interior decoration resembled paintings of ancient churches of Yaroslavl and Rostov the Great. The upper church was consecrated in the name of the Feodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, who was considered the patroness of the Romanov House. And the lower, cave church, in the name of St. Seraphim of Sarov.

In 1914, the church received the status of the Sovereign’s church – it became the house church of the Romanovs. It was also a regimental church. Therefore, different entrances and even different places inside were intended for them. A special “royal room” was set up in the lower church. Ordinary parishioners could only enter it on major holidays and only by special invitation.

‘I think the most important thing is that we do feel like we belong here’

Learn the story of the Shutzmans, a happy family of nine, who did the one thing most Americans would least expect – they moved to Russia.

Despite fears of being discriminated against, expecting people to be angry with them all the time, or even being approached by the FSB, they found Russia to be a safe haven where people are very nice – not at all depressed and horrible, as shown in American movies.

2 words Russians struggle the most to spell in 2025 😱

The words ‘correspondent’ and ‘professor’ (‘корреспондент’ и ‘профессор’) turned out to be the most difficult for Russians to spell.
On April 5, the annual ‘Totalny Diktant’ (‘Total Dictation’) campaign was held in Russia, in which a whopping 1.3 million people took part! Under dictation, they had to write down a given text, prepared by writer Marina Moskvina. And then, a special commission checked for errors in spelling and punctuation.

This year, it turned out that the most frequent mistakes were in the words ‘correspondent’ and ‘professor’!
Many people remembered that there are double consonants in them, but were confused about where exactly they should be put.
Also, as the organizers say, other words that caused the most difficulties in writing included: ‘превращения’ (‘transformations’) and ‘экскаватор’ (‘excavator’), which some people mixed up with ‘эскалатор’ (‘escalator’).
Do you remember how to write them correctly?

Easter 2025: Why Catholics & Orthodox Christians celebrate it on the same day

In 2025, Easter will be celebrated on the same date for all Christians, on April 20. Last time the date coincided in 2017, however, the next time, it will occur as soon as in 2028. On average, this is what happens every three years.
The Resurrection of Christ celebration in Christian churches is a passing holiday, which means its date changes every year. The day of the Christian Easter, as well as its prototype, the Old Testament Passover (Pesach), is determined by the lunar calendar.

Back in the 4th century, before the Christian Church divided, it was adopted to celebrate Easter on the first Sunday after the spring full moon. That is, the first full moon after March 21, the day of the vernal equinox.
The first Sunday after the spring full moon always falls on different days. There is also another thing to consider. The Russian Orthodox Church calculates this date on the Julian calendar, while, since the 16th century, Catholics observe the new Gregorian calendar. And the difference between them amounts to 13 days.

Despite the fact that Russia officially switched to the Gregorian calendar after the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, the Church in Russia is still oriented to the old, Julian calendar.
In 2024, the difference between Easter was more than a month! Catholics (as well as, for example, the Armenian Apostolic Church) celebrated the holiday on March 31, while the Russian Orthodox Church celebrated it on May 5.

This Soviet architect believed that people would live in flying cities in the future! (PICS)

In 1928, a young architect named Georgy Krutikov came up with a project of a city of the future. He believed that in the bright future Soviet cities would no longer be built according to the principle of capitalist megalopolises with a rectangular street layout: people should abandon bourgeois remnants and move… to the sky!

According to his idea, communal cities should emerge: a production center with factories would remain on the ground, while high-rise residential buildings would be located above. Krutikov developed several variants. In one, eight residential buildings were united by a lower ring, which housed public spaces. Another was a cylindrical building with hotel-type housing and an elevator shaft in the center.

Krutikov thought through not only the external appearance of the houses of the future. For example, he thought that people would get to work in a special transforming capsule. The transport of the future, thanks to its plastic shell, could change shape, move both in the air and on the ground and even under water. And, if necessary, such a capsule could be transformed… into housing! What a capsule hotel!

The Soviet architect was not a dreamer, but rather a visionary. He was inspired, among other things, by the ideas of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the founder of cosmonautics, and corresponded with him. Krutikov believed that his houses would be able to float above the ground thanks to atomic energy and individual capsules would be charged by them. At the same time, they had to be controlled with the help of influence on the magnetic field – it was enough to wave your hand.

How the USSR helped China in the war against Japan

In July 1937, the Sino-Japanese War began. Almost immediately, the poorly trained and poorly equipped Chinese army began to suffer defeat after defeat.

The USSR was the first to come to the aid of its southern neighbor, as it saw Japan as a potential threat to its own security.

Moscow provided Chiang Kai-shek's ruling Kuomintang party with several soft loans, which were used to pay for military equipment and weapons. Over the course of several years, the USSR supplied the Chinese with about 1,300 combat and training aircraft, 1,600 artillery pieces, 82 tanks, 14,000 machine guns and 110,000 rifles and ammunition.

To increase the combat readiness of Chinese troops, more than 4,000 military specialists and advisers were sent to China. Among them were tankers, artillerymen, medics and signalmen, but the overwhelming majority were pilots, aircraft engineers and technicians.

As volunteers, Soviet pilots took direct part in battles against the Imperial Army Air Force. They defended the skies over Nanjing, bombed airfields near Shanghai and on Taiwan and enemy ships on the Yangtze River.

“The Japanese became more cautious – the lessons, as they say, were useful. They no longer rushed headlong, relying on numerical superiority… they abandoned the standard tactics and began to treat the enemy much more ‘respectfully’,” recalled Lieutenant Colonel Dmitry Kudymov.

In 1941, the USSR began to gradually curtail aid to the Kuomintang. This was due to the worsening relations between the government of Chiang Kai-shek and the communists of Mao Zedong, as well as the Soviet-Japanese Neutrality Pact concluded in April.

When Nazi Germany invaded the USSR on June 22, the Kremlin no longer had time for China.
