As previously covered, much of the supply of the Confederate Army came from Britain. The London Armory sold very many rifles to the CSA, but another company appeared just as ready to sell products to the newly contested region of America.

A number of archives exist which demonstrate the participation in one Fraser & Trenholm Co. which financed the South's importation. This company was predominantly involved in the trade of cotton, of critical importance to Britain's booming textiles industry. This cotton broker (more on cotton brokers will come in the future) had considerable pressure to support the Confederacy as it relied on her cotton production. This company acted unofficially as the South's financial representation abroad, being utilized as a middle man. This was crucial, as the South lacked access to crediting. Fraser & Trenholm did not.

Utilizing cotton as collateral, Fraser & Trenholm was a mediary in accessing credit, this essentially converted the Confederacy's massive cotton reserves into being functional identical to a gold reserve.

In fact, much like how many nations issue gold bonds, the South issued cotton bonds. These were held by European investors just as an investor may purchase gold bonds. This helped to fund the Confederacy and support its unofficial trade in Europe.

Being a large company, Fraser & Trenholm possessed their own fleet which the Confederacy could utilize as a hidden merchant marine. Confederate ships were targeted by privateers as often as Union ships were by Confederate privateers, and so having a supposedly neutral fleet offered a way to avoid predation. Many blockade runners would operate as Fraser & Trenholm vessels to legitimize their business.

Someone joined when it was the History of the Union and left when I changed it back to Dixie lol. So long, Yankee.

I wanted to apologize for taking so long to write any content for this channel. I'm still alive, I still have plans to make the newsletter, I've just been distracted by a lot going on I'd rather not get into, but I'd like to start making posts with some regularity going forward.
