Good Idea: Do not fall for dark Mirrors in Debates

https://www.fortressofdoors.com/dark-mirror-ideologies/

"I find Dark Mirror ideologies fascinating because they seem vanishingly rare in real life, yet they're constantly invoked in online
political debates. The general form of a Dark Mirror accusation looks like this:
“You don't really believe what you say, you just want bad things.”
Let's take some random topic like, say, Minimum wage:
Pro-Increase (accusing opponents):“You know people can’t live on $7.25 — you just want to exploit workers and keep them desperate.”
Anti-Increase (accusing supporters):“You
know it’ll kill small businesses and jobs — you just want to score political points and look generous with other people’s money.”
In this contrived example the Pro-Increase and Anti-Increase camps are not
Dark Mirrors of each other (they believe different things about what Minimum wage policy will do), yet they believe their opponents secretly agree with them and are just choosing to be evil for some malicious reason."
Good idea: cost transparency

https://www.hbs.edu/ris/Publication%20Files/15-017_f67df7f5-8336-47fc-a0c1-098838aa550d.pdf

Firms do not typically disclose information on their costs to produce a good to consumers. However, we provide evidence of when and why doing so can increase consumers’ purchase interest. Specifically, building on the psychology of disclosure and trust, we posit that cost transparency, insofar as it represents an act of sensitive disclosure, fosters trust. In turn, this heightened trust enhances consumers’ willingness to purchase from that firm.
Good idea: community owned solar farms

https://www.ecowatch.com/scotland-largest-community-solar-farm.html

A major new community solar project is coming to the Isle of Arran in Scotland. The 6 megawatt Glenkiln solar farm will be Scotland’s largest entirely community-owned solar farm.

The £5 million ($6.48 million) project proposal recently gained planning approval and will move forward in securing construction financing, Energy Global reported. According to Arran Community Renewables (ACR), the local Community Benefit Society behind the project, Glenkiln solar farm will generate enough energy to power around 1,250 households per year by the time it is in operation in 2027.

Good idea: protect your privacy at the US border

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/mar/26/phone-search-privacy-us-border-immigration

If you’re a visa or green card holder with plans to travel to the US, reports of people being turned away at airports over messages found on their devices might be prompting you to second-guess your travel plans. You might be asking whether Customs and Border Protection (CBP) can search your phone, whether you can opt out and what you should do to minimize your risks.

Good Idea: Know how to respond to cardiac arrest

https://www.cbc.ca/radio/whitecoat/the-dose-cardiac-arrest-1.7136483

Every year, there are approximately 60,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in Canada, with only 10% of those affected surviving. Quick action is critical, and even without formal CPR training, people can make a difference by doing chest compressions or using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

1. Recognizing cardiac arrest: The person will collapse, be unresponsive, and either not breathe or gasp.

2. Call the Emergency!

3. Start CPR immediately with chest compressions at 100-120 beats per minute.

4. Use an AED if available; it will guide you with audio instructions.

Good Idea: Learn how to swim

https://danswim.com/complete-guide-for-adult-beginner-swimmer

1. Set a clear goal: Define why you want to learn to swim, whether for fitness, fun, or overcoming a fear.

2. Assess your comfort level in water: Start in a shallow, safe environment and get used to how water feels on your body.

3. Master breathing: Practice exhaling underwater while staying calm and controlled.

4. Learn buoyancy: Master front and back floating to build your confidence and body control.

5. Practice flutter kicking: This foundational skill helps you with basic strokes like freestyle and backstroke.

6. Use swimming gear: Consider using equipment like kickboards, snorkels, and fins to make learning easier and more engaging.

7. Stay consistent: Regular practice (2-3 times a week) will improve your skills.

8. Challenge yourself: Increase distance, try new strokes, and incorporate speed drills.

9. Join a swim community: Engage with others to stay motivated and supported.

10. Track your progress: Keep a log of your swims to monitor improvement and adjust training.

Good Idea: Floss your teeth

https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1071542

Regularly flossing your teeth may help lower the risk of stroke caused by blood clots and irregular heartbeats, such as atrial fibrillation (AFib), according to a preliminary study presented at the American Stroke Association’s 2025 International Stroke Conference. The study found that flossing at least once a week was linked to a lower risk of strokes from heart-driven blood clots and a reduction in AFib. This protective effect is thought to be related to reducing oral infections and inflammation.

Good Idea: Direct Action at the Workplace

https://iww.org.uk/resource/organise_direct_action/

Direct action in the workplace is about workers finding creative ways to disrupt an employer's profits while still holding their jobs. Instead of relying on long strikes, workers can use use their collective power to push for better conditions. While some of these actions may be considered unlawful, they have often been effective in bringing about real change for workers.

Slowdown: Working at a reduced pace to cut productivity.

Work to Rule: Following every workplace rule to the letter, causing inefficiencies.

Good Work Strike: Offering better services to customers without charging them, affecting the employer's profits.

Sitdown Strike: Stopping work but staying on-site to prevent replacement workers from taking over.

Whistle Blowing: Exposing unethical practices to the public to gain support.

Sick-In: Calling in sick en masse to disrupt operations without formally striking.
