Analyst comment:
There's a 0% chance Powell didn't know the tariffs were coming and to generally what degree, and on which nations. There's a good reason he didn't move the rate at the last FOMC meeting. He has since walked back his comments about "transitory tariffs", ironically just like Yellen did in regards to inflation a year ago. In not moving the rate lower last month, he's now more than justified in bumping it up higher to address the credible threat posed by these tariffs. This is the OPPOSITE of what Trump wants.

Trump shared to his Truth Social account yesterday what's essentially an audio version of a month-old /pol/ post. His all but stated goal at this point is to crash markets, force cash into bonds sending interest rates lower, and allowing the treasury to refinance the national debt at much lower rates.

We'll see whether or not Powell cooperates.

ZW/twitter anons are on the right track. It's worth understanding what tariffs are. They're not a tax paid by US companies buying imports—they're paid by FOREIGN companies trying to sell to US firms. Tariffs have the immediate effect of making foreign goods more expensive, especially perishables like produce. They prevent foreign dumping of goods and are ultimately pro-taxpayer and pro-labor.

Brief:
Russia is replacing France as financial and military suzerain of Saharan Africa. The so-called "Francafrique" is dying on the vine.

Analyst comment:
Saharan Africa is resource-rich yet remarkably poor, much like the rest of Africa. France has for centuries exploited the extraction of resources to fund their otherwise unsustainable social welfare programs at home. It may be accurately said that the memes about the French working little and striking regularly have been in part due to Francafrique floating the costs of otherwise substandard productivity. French aggression elsewhere may also be explained by taking on water from losing this lucrative revenue stream (in particular, Macron's bellicosity toward Ukraine).

The remaining ECOWAS nations, erstwhile coastal colonial possessions of the French, British, Portuguese and Spanish, will continue to chafe in the waning days of "Atlantique" hegemony. Expect more juntas—more deterioration of USAFRICOM, redrawing of borders, conflicts and proxy wars between CIA/MI6/DGSE-backed militias and Kremlin-backed Wagner & local auxiliaries—not fewer. Russia's position is a precarious one, however, and seems to rely entirely on a close relationship with Syria and Libya to maintain supply lines.
