POLITICO has uncovered a social media account allegedly belonging to Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, that repeatedly criticized the Trump administration and Vice President JD Vance before his elevation to the papacy.

The new pope appears to have shared posts challenging Vance's interpretation of Christianity and the administration's strict immigration policies.

The account also circulated criticism of Trump's April 2025 Oval Office meeting with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and shared an op-ed by DC auxiliary Bishop Evelio Menjivar highlighting the suffering of migrants deported to El Salvador under Trump administration policies.

Additionally, the social media trail shows opposition to the death penalty, support for gun control measures, and advocacy for more inclusive immigration policies dating back to Trump's first term.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, announced the launch of a military operation targeting Ben Gurion Airport, using a hypersonic ballistic missile.

Saree reiterated the warning to airlines that have yet to comply with the airspace ban, urging them to immediately halt all flights to the occupied Palestinian territories.

He affirmed that the ban on air navigation to airports in occupied Palestine will remain in place until the aggression on Gaza ends and the blockade is lifted.

Additionally, the ban on Israeli ship passage through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea remains in force, with support operations continuing, Saree said.

A second F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet deployed from the USS Harry S. Truman has gone down in the Red Sea, marking the second such incident involving the carrier in just over a week, CNN reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The aircraft reportedly experienced a malfunction with the arresting gear while attempting to land aboard the vessel, forcing the pilot and weapons systems officer to eject. Both crew members were retrieved by a rescue helicopter and sustained only minor injuries, according to one source.

The jet sank into the Red Sea and has not yet been recovered.

While some economists suggest the impact of tariffs may have been masked by transshipments through third countries or pre-existing contracts, they warn that more pronounced slowdowns may be ahead.

This economic backdrop sets the stage for weekend meetings in Switzerland between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, the first high-level talks since the tariffs were imposed.

The foreign ministers of six European nations released a joint statement on Wednesday addressing "Israel’s" plans to intensify its military actions in the Gaza Strip and to establish a long-term presence in the Palestinian territory.

"This would mean crossing yet another line, marking a dangerous new escalation and jeopardizing any prospects of a viable Two-State solution," declared the foreign ministers of Spain, Norway, Ireland, Luxembourg, Slovenia, and Iceland in the statement, which appeared on the official website of Iceland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministers also cautioned that "a further military escalation in Gaza will only exacerbate an already catastrophic situation for the civilian Palestinian population and threaten the lives of the hostages that remain in captivity."

"We firmly reject any demographic or territorial change in Gaza, including any scheme that would force or facilitate the permanent displacement of its population, which would be in violation of international law," the top diplomats emphasized.

They further voiced strong opposition to "a system that does not ensure that the entire population gets access to humanitarian aid."

Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched multiple drone strikes on Port Sudan and Kassala on Wednesday, including Sudan's largest naval base.

The RSF struck Port Sudan's main port, power station, and the country's last functional airport with drone strikes on Tuesday.

Port Sudan serves as the army-aligned government's de facto capital and crucial humanitarian lifeline, through which nearly all aid enters a country where famine has been declared and 25 million face severe food insecurity. The city hosts hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians who fled violence elsewhere in Sudan.

This escalation follows the RSF's March 2025 territorial losses in Khartoum, after which they increasingly turned to drone warfare. The conflict between army chief al-Burhan and RSF leader Hemedti, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands, displaced 13 million, and effectively split the country.

The Sudanese army accuses the United Arab Emirates of supplying advanced drones to the RSF, an allegation that was part of a genocide case recently dismissed by the International Court of Justice due to jurisdictional issues.
An Ansar Allah official told Reuters that no direct talks were held between Sanaa and Washington to reach the ceasefire deal.

Oman had announced mediating the deal on Tuesday night, confirming that the US aggression on Yemen would stop, while in exchange, the Yemeni Armed Forces would spare US ships in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait.
The Syrian interim government has appointed Ahmad al-Hayis, known as Abu Hatim Shuqra, a former commander of the Ahrar al-Sharqiya faction, as head of the newly formed 86th Division, tasked with securing the provinces of al-Hasakah, Raqqa, and Deir Ezzor.

The decision, issued by interim Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra, also grants al-Hayis the rank of brigadier general in what is being called the "new Syrian army."

The appointment has provoked strong condemnation from Kurdish sources and groups affiliated with the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who view it as a provocative move given al-Hayis' notorious record.

Shuqra is widely accused of leading one of the factions most involved in serious human rights violations against Kurdish civilians in Afrin and Ras al-Ain, following their occupation during the Turkish-led military offensive Olive Branch in 2018 and Peace Spring in 2019.
Dr. Raed al-Baba speaks to Al Mayadeen about the worsening crisis in Gaza caused by the ongoing Israeli blockade, a crisis that is devastating the lives of children deprived of basic nutrition and essential needs.

From malnutrition to severe anemia, Gaza’s children are at constant risk, if not killed by Israeli bombs, then slowly starved to death.

In a significant shift, the Netherlands, long regarded as one of "Israel’s" closest allies within the European Union, is demanding a formal review of the EU-"Israel" Association Agreement.

Speaking at an EU foreign ministers meeting in Warsaw, the Dutch foreign minister, Caspar Veldkamp, described "Israel's" two-month blockade of humanitarian aid to Gaza as "catastrophic, truly dismal."

The Dutch government has pledged to veto any extension of the EU-"Israel" action plan, which implements the association agreement that came into force in 2000.

The EU is "Israel's" largest trading partner, and the Dutch government has previously led efforts to block discussions of suspending the agreement, a lever most persistently advocated by Ireland and Spain.

Other EU officials have expressed similar concerns. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot called the situation "an absolute shame," while Luxembourg's Xavier Bettel lamented that Israeli officials appear to be "listening to no one."
According to Reuters, the Trump administration is considering deporting migrants to Libya for the first time this week, however, the number of migrants being deported there was not specified.

Interestingly, the US State Department criticized Libya's handling of prisons and detention centers in its annual human rights report released in 2024.

Nonetheless, Libya's Government of National Unity is denying any coordination with the US on the reception of migrants.

Similarly, in a report by The Washington Post, the Trump administration also called on Ukraine to accept US deportees who are citizens of other countries. The report did not mention how officials in Ukraine responded.

These efforts are part of a wider campaign involving countries like Rwanda, El Salvador, and Uzbekistan, using a mix of incentives and coercion to offload deportees, including non-nationals of the receiving countries.
Speaking with German public broadcaster ZDF on Tuesday, Germany's new chancellor, Friedrich Merz, told the US to "stay out" of German domestic politics.

Merz, who has extensive ties with the US, said he had always felt that America “can clearly distinguish between extremist parties and parties of the political centre."

He also noted that he “did not interfere in the American election campaign” that elected Trump.

This comes after Trump allies showed public support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which the German domestic intelligence agency has designated as "right-wing extremist".

US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, called this designation "tyranny in disguise," while Vice President JD Vance wrote on X, “The West tore down the Berlin Wall together. And it has been rebuilt – not by the Soviets or the Russians, but by the German establishment.”

Moreover, in January, Musk virtually participated in an AfD rally, calling the crowd "the best hope" for Germany.
Following the agreement struck between Washington and Sanaa, mediated by Oman, the President of the Political Supreme Council in Yemen, Mahdi al-Mashat, reiterated Yemen's support of Gaza.

Al-Mashat sent a strong-worded message to Israeli settlers, urging them to leave for their homelands or stay in shelters, warning of a forthcoming Yemeni response to the Israeli aggression on the Yemeni Hodeidah port on Tuesday.

Later, al-Mashat said that authorities in Sanaa indirectly informed Washington that the continued escalation in the region will only affect the visits of "the criminal Trump" to the region. He said that Yemen did not inform the US of anything else.

"If the criminal Trump wants to stop his aggression and compensate [for the destruction] he left behind, that is up to him," al-Mashat emphasized.
The 80th Victory Day Parade in Moscow brought together 11,500 troops and 183 military units, highlighting a broad array of arsenal on Red Square.

The mechanized column was led by the iconic T-34 tank, followed by modern platforms including the BRM-1K reconnaissance vehicle equipped with a new remote-controlled combat module and dynamic defense system. Also on display were the 152mm Giatsint-K and Malva artillery systems, Tornado-S multiple rocket launchers, and the TOS-2 Tosochka thermobaric flamethrower.

The parade also showcased advanced weaponry such as the S-400 Triumph air defense system, high-precision Iskander-M missile launchers, Msta-S self-propelled howitzers, and infantry fighting vehicles outfitted with next-generation targeting systems.

Making their debut appearance, the 7th Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment presented a range of UAVs and loitering munitions, including the Orlan-10, Lancet-52, and Zala drones.

According to Axios, President Trump held a private meeting with Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer at the White House on Thursday, discussing the Iran nuclear talks and the war on Gaza just days before Trump's Middle East trip.

The private meeting comes at a critical juncture, two days after Israeli officials were reportedly "shocked" by Trump's surprise truce with Ansar Allah, which doesn't protect "Israel" from attacks, and ahead of Sunday's US-Iran nuclear talks in Muscat.

While Netanyahu pushes for military options against Iran, Trump continues to pursue diplomacy, stating he's working toward a nuclear deal "without having to use military force." The US President will visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE next week, notably skipping "Israel".

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, head of the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon, Lt. Gen. Aroldo Lázaro, said that "Israel's" continued military activities have prevented the full deployment of the Lebanese Army in the South and delayed the return of displaced civilians.

UNIFIL’s area of operations in southern Lebanon lies between the Litani River and the Blue Line and their mission is to observe and report all violations of Resolution 1701.

According to Lázaro, UNIFIL has recorded over 2,600 airspace violations by "Israel", 1,400 instances of Israeli military activity north of the Blue Line, more than 60 airstrikes and drone attacks, and upwards of 750 artillery shelling incidents.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and chief trade negotiator Jamieson Greer will meet Vice Premier of China He Lifeng in Geneva on Saturday.

The talks come after weeks of escalating tensions that have seen duties on goods imports between the world's two largest economies reach 145%.

China said that the US reached out to discuss "tariffs and other issues."

Bessent says that the meeting on Saturday is unlikely to result in a trade deal, but it could at least pave the way to de-escalate the trade war that has damaged both economies.
The Trump administration has announced it will bar Harvard from receiving new federal research grants, intensifying its ongoing clash with the prestigious university.

This move marks the latest in a series of attacks by President Donald Trump on Harvard and other top-tier institutions, which he has accused of advancing progressive ideologies and encouraging a culture of "wokeness" on their campuses.

Just last week, Trump said he intended to revoke Harvard’s tax-exempt status. He had also previously unveiled plans to cut over $2.2 billion in federal funding to the university, leading Harvard to take legal action against his administration.
