From his early engagement with phenomenology to his later poetic meditations, Martin Heidegger’s way of thinking is as complex and challenging as it is enchanting and inviting. In his endeavor to revive the question of Being, Heidegger radically reinterpreted the character of philosophy and intimated the hermeneutic nature of human existence, transforming hermeneutics from the conventional exegesis of texts into a pathway of experiencing Being in every corner of philosophy, poetry, and everyday life.

In Heidegger’s Hermeneutics, Egor Falyov explores the development of Heidegger’s hermeneutic philosophizing and traces the method of interpretation that unfolds along its pathways. Shedding light on the turning points of Heidegger’s understanding of Dasein, history, and language, Falyov offers a lucid introduction to Heidegger’s thought as well as a critical study of its nuances and tensions. Weaving together diverse contexts and contentions, this wide-ranging study addresses the crossroads between Heidegger’s hermeneutics and key moments in Western as well as Eastern philosophy, highlighting the enduring relevance of Heidegger’s open-ended interpreting.

Prof. Dr. Egor Falyov is the deputy director of the Department for the History of Foreign Philosophy at Moscow State University. Heidegger’s Hermeneutics, based on his doctoral dissertation and lecture courses, was awarded Moscow State University’s Shuvalov Prize in 2008. Falyov has authored and co-authored several textbooks on the history of philosophy and is a member of the editorial board of the journal Philosophy and Society. In addition to his specialization in Western philosophy, Falyov’s scholarship extends to Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, which he has studied at the Dzongsar Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö Institute and the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in India.

One of the ways in which Mamleev frightened even his own coevals from the Yuzhinskii Circle was through the transformation which many claim he underwent during his time in America. As Aleksandr Dugin and Igor Dudinsky (among others) have insisted, he left Russia as the author of a work no less disquieting than Shatuny, and he returned as something totally other - the author of a tale titled "Charlie," which is as spiritually upsetting, if not more so.

If those who witnessed his Return are to be believed, this was not the legendary "Mamlei" about whom so many alcohol-soaked chants had been penned in collective apartments and Moscow beer taverns. This was a being from the other side of a black mirror, who had stepped out of his inverted, American hell to take the place of the one who had corresponded with him in those earliest days on the Lane of the Executioners.

Valentin Provotorov describes his first "unsightly" encounter with The Other Mamleev as follows:

"During his exile, Mamleev was baptized. He underwent treatment for his alcoholism in New York, where he was living at the time. His bouts of drunkenness stopped. When he came back to Russia, we agreed to meet up at the metro station 'Tekstil'shchiki.' A bunch of us got out of the train car. He was standing off in the distance, and I'm short-sighted, so I couldn't see his face. But I immediately recognized his posture. It was an American posture. He walked toward us, his spine straightened out. You could immediately tell that he wasn't one of us.

Another interesting thing about Mamleev is the mystical aura that surrounds him. For a person like him to exist out in the open, in plain sight of everyone, he needed to know how to straighten himself out. But to then go through exile, which was hell for him, to survive and come back home with that American posture..."

5 Years of PRAV Publishing

Five years ago, in the third month of the second decade of the 21st century, era vulgaris, in the days when lockdowns were being declared around the world, PRAV Publishing appeared.

No one was expecting or suspecting us. No one asked for or commissioned a new publishing house. And no one could have calculated or predicted the path ahead. PRAV Publishing arose out of something deeper, wider, and higher than current “interest,” “demand,” “discourse,” or “audiences.” PRAV Publishing emerged at the junction of stirring thoughts and spirits pulling continents together, seeking to be gathered and communicated, aspiring to be recorded and to go down in history — or perhaps rather to reawaken and re-enliven this “thing” called “history” for the first time in a while, after it had supposedly already “ended.” One outcome is certain: PRAV has become the landscape where readers and researchers travel to discover works which are courageously independent, beyond their time, and provoke radical rethinking.

« Social institutions, to be considered traditional, must be effectively attached in their principle to a doctrine that is itself traditional, whether it be metaphysical or religious or of any other conceivable kind. In other words, those institutions are traditional that find their ultimate justification in their more or less direct, but always intentional and conscious, dependence upon a doctrine which, as regards its fundamental nature, is in every case of an intellectual order; but this intellectuality may be found either in a pure state, in cases where one is dealing with an entirely metaphysical doctrine, or else it may be found mingled with other heterogenous elements, as in the case of the religious or other special modes which a traditional doctrine is capable of assuming… Nothing in principle precludes the existence, at any period or in any country, of men capable of attaining to complete metaphysical knowledge; and this would even be possible in the contemporary Western world, though doubtless unlikely by reason of the general tendencies governing men’s outlook, which create as unfavourable a background as can well be imagined…

If a few people in the West, through reading the preceding pages, could become conscious of all that is lacking to them intellectually, if they could, we do not say understand, but only just catch a glimpse and a suspicion of it, then this work would not have been written in vain… Furthermore, changes such as we have in mind could either come about slowly and gradually, requiring several centuries in which to mature, or on the other hand they might occur rapidly after sudden and unforeseen upheavals…

Howbeit, the point we wish to stress is that in order to prepare the way for the changes in question it is in no wise necessary for the mass of Westerners, or for the generality of so-called intellectuals even, to take part in the work at the outset; even were this not quite impossible, it would in certain respects do more harm than good; it is enough, therefore, as a start, for a few individuals to understand the need for such a change, but of course on condition that they understand it truly and thoroughly…

A return to traditional civilization, both in principle and in respect of the whole body of institutions, is obviously the basic condition for the transformation we have been speaking about, or rather it is identical with that transformation itself… The return to tradition appears then as the most essential of the objects to which the intellectual elite ought to devote its activities; the difficult would be to give effect to all that this implies in the various orders of activity…

The work to be undertaken would have to be confined at the start purely to the intellectual order, which comprises all that is really essential, since it is concerned with the principles on which all else depends; it is obvious that its consequences would spread later on, more or less quickly, into every other sphere, by a perfectly natural repercussion. Modifying the mental outlook of a people is the one and only means of bringing about any deep or lasting change, even in the social sphere; to think of starting out from consequences is a pre-eminently illogical method, only worthy of the impatient and sterile agitation of present-day Westerners… If we have confined our attention to the intellectual point of view, that is because it is in all respects the first thing to be attended to; but we will remind the reader that he must not narrow his conception of it in any way, since it comprises possibilities that are literally unlimited… »

A gift from the East:

Maxim Makovchik, who is retranslating Guénon into Russian (see his channel https://t.me/Guenon_source) and has published two essays in Passages: Studies in Traditionalism and Traditions, sent me the second edition of his translation of Guénon’s first book (1921), General Introduction to the Study of the Hindu Doctrines.

It is noteworthy that the Russian edition is based on the first English edition published in 1945, which was translated with a foreword by Marco Pallis (left out of the well-known Sophia Perennis English edition). Guénon made significant changes and additions to the English edition, most notably revising his views on Buddhism, which made the English edition the most updated exposition of some of his oldest as well as newest perspectives, especially following the lack of communication and publications conditioned by the Second World War. These changes only became known to French readers in an article by Pallis in the memorial issue of Études traditionnelles following Guénon’s death. In the meanwhile, Pallis had translated Guénon into Tibetan. We will likely never know which lamas in Tibet and abroad received Pallis’ translation, but we do know that he met with the Dalai Lama’s close associates at the time and that he hosted many Tibetans in England, including Chögyam Trungpa, whom he helped write his autobiography.
