Iran and the United States started a new round of nuclear talks in Rome on Saturday to resolve their decades-long standoff over Tehran's atomic aims, under the shadow of President Donald Trump's threat to unleash military action if diplomacy fails.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff will negotiate indirectly through an Omani official who will shuttle messages between the two sides, Iranian officials said, a week after a first round of indirect talks in Muscat that both sides described as constructive.
Araqchi and Witkoff interacted briefly at the end of the first round, but officials from the two countries have not held direct negotiations since 2015 under former U.S. President Barack Obama.
Araqchi, in a meeting with his Italian counterpart ahead of the talks, said Iran had always been committed to diplomacy and called on "all parties involved in the talks to seize the opportunity to reach a reasonable and logical nuclear deal".

The three top staffers for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth who were suspended as part of the Signal group chat investigation have each been terminated.
Darin Selnick, the Pentagon's deputy chief of staff, and Dan Caldwell - a senior adviser to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, were placed on administrative leave as part of the probe.
Colin Carroll, chief of staff to Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg, was suspended a day later.
All three have since been let go, a spokesman for the Pentagon told DailyMail Friday night.
Hegseth's Chief of Staff Joe Kasper is also set to resign in the coming days, Politico reported.
A senior defense official told DailyMai of Kasper and the other three: 'At this time no final senior staffing changes have been decided, and the Secretary will make any future announcements on his own timetable.'
Kasper's departure would be especially curious, as he put in the request for an investigation into multiple leaks out of the Pentagon last month.

Just Human #312: Market Catastrophizing, Narrative Captures, Didactics, and Real Shit
Usually I arrive at an episode with a decidedly contrarian take on the news at hand. I like finding the flaw or the fake within the news, the sleight of hand that is occurring, or the manipulation with how it is being presented that, if exposed, alters the story being told. I also enjoy highlighting the grander strategies in play. To some degree and in my own way, I do both of those things in this episode.
But I am arriving at the microphone for this episode with much less of a contrarian disposition than is my norm. That is because I can relate to the major economic news of today and the last several days. Or rather, I relate to how others are relating to the economic news of recent days. My confidence in the Trump administration and its economic strategies aside— I get it. I identify with the stress, with the reactions, and with the panic.
I relate to the catastrophizing because catastrophic thinking, well, I do that a lot. I'm okay, but defeating the vicious, negative thought loops, especially once they get an entropy to them, and escaping the distortions they imbue is exhausting.
All across the recent news cycles, negative thought loops are being sown, leading people to be captured by both the negative narratives coming at them and their own catastrophizing based on those narratives.
So with all that in mind, I approach this episode not so much with an aim to contradict the narratives themselves but instead to adjust your perspective on them through reorientation and with clarity from where you are, not from where the negative narrative originates.
That’s the first half of the episode.
In the second half… Well, you’ll have to listen/watch to find out.

These offices are wings of the agency in Washington, D.C., that focus on a variety of foreign policy issues and are viewed by the Trump administration as no longer necessary.
The 700 positions are for civil service and foreign service employees, rather than political appointees. The elimination of the roles is in addition to the State Department’s ask for under secretaries to reduce their personnel by 15 percent.
The State Department is also transferring 137 offices to other parts of the agency to consolidate programs."

In this episode, The Atlantic has published what it says are screenshots of the “Houthi PC small group” Signal chat, which is evolving into, by design, something approximating the Flynn-Kislyak-Kushner Trump Tower meeting of this would-be scandal.
Now dubbed Signalgate by the usual suspects, this is obviously the Flynn-ing of Waltz… Or maybe Hegseth, since he, or his account, is who sent the “attack plans” to the Signal chat group.
Games the game, and there are many games underway with this one. No indications of them ending anytime soon, only accelerating—THAT judge (Boasberg) has just ordered the admin and agencies to preserve records related to the Signal chat.

The Atlantic magazine on Wednesday released what it described as the full text of a group chat mistakenly shared with a journalist by top Trump administration officials, revealing plans for an imminent attack on Yemen.
Screenshots of the chat included detailed information on strike times and the types of aircraft involved. The magazine said it decided to publish the messages after the Trump administration ‘repeatedly denied that any classified information had been discussed in the unsecure chat.’
