The dogwoods' blossoming this year throughout our woods has been lovelier than I can express.
I think many have felt moved the same and this explains why there's a very old legend elevating the dogwood tree above any other.
Blessing to you all this Easter 🤍
An old poem —
In Jesus' time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.
'Twas strong and firm, its branches interwoven.
For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen.
Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
"Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so.
Slender and twisted, it shall be
With blossoms like the cross for all to see.
As blood stains the petals marked in brown,
The blossom's center wears a thorny crown.
All who see it will remember Me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.
Cherished and protected, this tree shall be
A reminder to all of My agony."
I think many have felt moved the same and this explains why there's a very old legend elevating the dogwood tree above any other.

Detoxifying Life — Soap
Commercial soap, in short, will disrupt your hormones (which control just about everything in your body) and give you cancer.
Thankfully, it's easy to find bar soap that's naturally made. However, I've had a hard time finding liquid soap that we like. Well, I've found it! We've been using it for a couple of months and find it perfect. I'm also shocked at how cheap it is.

We've noticed recently that our egg yolks aren't what they used to be — they are prone to breaking, no matter how gently I crack them.
After a little bit of research, I also realized that they weren't as round and vital looking at they generally are.
What causes this?
For us, a lack of protein.
Which really surprised us because our hens are given both 100% free range over a large property full of good things to eat in nature and a protein pellet/scratch grain combo everyday. If you have any theories on this, please share!

De-toxifying your house? Not so fast
Are you making efforts to de-toxify your house? We are.
One way to go about doing this is to DIY everything so that you know exactly what's in the things you come in contact with.
But before you jump to it, perhaps what you are using is safe for use — check it out, first. My dishwasher detergent is a good example.
I was ready to ditch my dishwasher detergent and start using washing soda + citric acid. However, I first searched for a "human safe" dishwasher detergent and compared the ingredients in my favored detergent. There were a few additional ingredients in mine. I looked those up Environmental Working Group (trustworthy and easy to use). All but one got a perfect rating from EWG. The one, "Fragrance", is speak for Phthalates — which are toxic.
I'm not perfectly scrupulous with this stuff. This detergent definitely works. It's slightly less expensive than washing soda + citric acid. And it's easier for me to buy. So, I'm sticking with mine.

Breakfast Sausage: Homestead Edition
Have you ever looked at the ingredients of a common commercially sold breakfast sausage? Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage patties have 3 different preservatives, MSG, and 2 kinds of sweetener.
Good news is that making your own is super easy.
Even better if you are raising your own pork or buying from a local small time farmer.*
1 lb. ground pork
1 T. brown sugar
2 t. dried sage
2 t. salt
1 t. pepper
1/4 t marjoram
18 t. red pepper flakes
1/16 t. ground cloves
Mix, make into patties, fry
*Ways to find a local farmer to buy meat from:
-feedstore bulletin board
-facebook marketplace
-craigslist
-call a local meat processing place and ask if they have any leads or, like our local meat processor, grow beef and pork to sell for slaughtering

Homemade Pizza Night with homemade Italian sausage
We're on a quest to replace all of our commercial sausage because it's filled with weird stuff that we definitely don't want to eat.
Below is the Italian sausage recipe we used and it was amazing! I'll also link the super easy and delicious pizza dough recipe. And our successful breakfast sausage recipe.
Italian Sausage:
1 lb ground pork
1/4 t red pepper flakes
3 T. brown sugar
1/2 t whole fennel
1/2 t crushed fennel
1 t parsley
1 t paprika
1/2 t salt
1/2 t. oregano
1/2 t garlic powder
1/4 t. rosemary
1/8 t thyme
