Biopiracy is Theft: Ethiopia’s Fight to Reclaim Teff and Its Sovereignty

Dr. Bayush Tsegaye, Executive Director of the Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium, called out the injustice behind the patenting of Teff, Ethiopia’s staple grain, by a Dutch company.

🌾 In 2003, Dutch company HPFI patented Teff processing methods without fulfilling its benefit-sharing agreement with Ethiopia.

“The company patented Teff in Europe… falsely presenting community knowledge as its own invention,” she told Sputnik Africa.

These patents blocked Ethiopia from accessing global Teff markets — a clear case of biopiracy, where indigenous knowledge is exploited for profit without consent or compensation.

“A country that has no seed and depends on external companies… cannot be able to ensure food security... sovereignty is very critical,” Dr. Bayush warned.

Ethiopia, a center of genetic diversity, is vulnerable to such exploitation.

🤍 But there’s hope. She sees Ethiopia’s BRICS membership as a new path away from debt traps and toward self-reliant development.

“It offers a new opportunity to access development funding and move away from the mainstream global loan system. […] It's also essential for African nations to build allies and strategize collectively to counter the strategies of the multinationals.”

Russia's Africa Policy: A Partnership, Not a Handout, Says DevCA Chairman

Russia's engagement with Africa is built on mutual respect and co-investment, according to David Okpatuma, Board Chairman of Nigeria's Development and Corporation for Africa (DevCA) Initiative.

Speaking to Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the IV Forum "Russia-Africa: What's Next?", Okpatuma emphasized Russia's commitment to a multipolar world where nations interact as equals.

🗣 "Russia is not just giving handouts or giving freebies. They are calling for African countries to be co-partners in mutual development, to be co-investors in the future we are jointly trying to build," Okpatuma stated, contrasting this approach with strategies that use foreign aid as a tool for penetration and control.

Okpatuma believes Russia's approach fosters a more sustainable development model.

Russia's Former President Suggests Creating Alternative to 'Inefficient' ICC, Possibly Under BRICS

In his article "Lost Illusions", Dmitry Medvedev accused the ICC of favoring the West, ignoring NATO crimes while targeting weaker states.

🗣 The ICC is inclined towards "condemning or pardoning only in the interests of the so-called collective West on the basis of [...] double standards," Medvedev, who is now the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, stated, noting the US's dismissive stance toward the court.

🌐 The proposed new body could focus on genocide, war crimes, and terrorism, grounded in international law, the former president wrote, emphasizing immunity for sovereign leaders and non-interference.
