… THE RIGHTEOUS WAY: MERCY, FORGIVENESS AND GODLY PATIENCE
Psalm 37 is a powerful chapter that contrasts the way of the wicked and the way of the righteous. It offers wisdom, comfort, and instruction for those who desire to walk uprightly in a world often filled with injustice.
Among the many deep truths in this chapter, verse 21 offers an insightful revelation that goes far beyond finances.
“The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.”
At first glance, this seems to be about money—and it certainly is, on one level. God’s Word clearly teaches integrity and responsibility in all areas, including the financial. If we borrow and do not repay, we show a lack of character, trustworthiness, and righteousness.
But there’s more to consider here …
SPIRITUAL DEBT AND THE MERCY OF GOD
When we come to Christ, we come as debtors—debtors to sin, to death, to judgment. And yet, through the cross, Jesus paid our debt in full. We are forgiven freely, not because we earned it, but because of God’s great mercy.
But how often do we, like the wicked in this verse, accept mercy and not pay it forward?
To “borrow and not repay” can also describe the spiritual failure of receiving God’s forgiveness while withholding it from others. We are called to forgive others as God has forgiven us.
Jesus told a powerful story to explain this:
The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (Matthew 18:21–35 KJV)
A servant owed his master an enormous debt and had no means to pay. The master forgave him fully, showing great mercy. But that same servant went out and demanded payment from someone who owed him a far smaller debt, and when the man couldn’t pay, he had him thrown into prison.
When the master found out, he was furious:
“Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?” MATTHEW 18:33
Because he failed to extend the same mercy he received, his own forgiveness was revoked, and he was delivered to the tormentors. This is a warning for us: if we have truly received God’s mercy, we must extend that same mercy to others.
THE RIGHTEOUS SHOW MERCY AND GIVE FREELY
Psalm 37:21 says the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth. Mercy and generosity are natural fruits of a life that has been transformed by grace.
Consider these verses:
Luke 6:36 “Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.”
Romans 13:8 “Owe no man any thing, but to love one another…”
Ephesians 4:32 “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
Colossians 3:13 “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another… even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.”
Forgiveness is not optional—it is commanded, and it is evidence that we truly understand the mercy we’ve received.
BE PATIENT AS GOD IS PATIENT WITH US
God’s mercy is inseparable from His patience. He is longsuffering toward us.
2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise… but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
Shouldn’t we have the same patience for others that He has for us?
We are often quick to judge, slow to forgive, and easily angered. But God is the opposite: slow to anger and rich in mercy and we should try to follow His example to our best efforts at all times.
In conclusion, don’t be a spiritual debtor:
Don’t receive grace and refuse to give it.
Don’t take the patience of God and then be impatient with others.
Don’t ask for forgiveness while also holding grudges in your heart.
Instead, be like the righteous man in Psalm 37:21—merciful, generous, and Christlike.
Thank God for forgiving us of a debt we could never repay and pray He helps us how to reflect the mercy and love that He gives us in how you treat others. Ask God this week, to give you a heart that forgives quickly, loves deeply, and gives freely, just as He has done for you.

PSALM 37: A PSALM OF DAVID
“Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday.
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.
For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming. The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.
A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the Lord upholdeth the righteous.
The Lord knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
He is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.
For the Lord loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever.
The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.
The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him. The Lord will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.
Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it.
I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree. Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.
Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off.
But the salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the Lord shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.”
